Definitely avoid going too far down Rivers Ave. deep into N. Charleston. You'll feel like you're going to get mugged/shot/busted for a drug deal.

OKSuzy- Emily made some great recommendations. Note on North Charleston though- better to stay close to the plazas/mall areas instead of heading inward North Charleston. There are definitely neighborhoods in there that I would avoid. Hanahan is also worth a look. Mt. Pleasant is great (nice homes, great places to eat) but a little too far from the base in my opinion.

Hello ladies, my son the ET called me at 9 this morning with the good news  he is transferring to Ballston Spa for prototype, which he volunteered for.  All of his ET classmates from power school class 1107 that volunteered for Ballston Spa got it, and he will be getting a house with a bunch of them.  They will be going there soon.

OkSuzy- I'm fairly certain he'll have to get his own off-base housing. I would suggest living in the North Charleston or Mount Pleasant area. Mount Pleasant is more of a drive, but a nicer area. North Charleston is a nicer/safer area than Goose Creek and about a 20 minute drive (I think it was 30 for Aaron with rush-hour traffic, but 10 minutes when he would get off super late/early).

Atlantic Palms are super nice and I believe they have the option for furnished. If you look through teh discussion posts above, there is a discussion that has lots of apartment reviews/options.

William, I hope you are right and that he does get leave in August and at Christmas.  That would be perfect.  At this point, I just know that my son told me that his class was told not to expect both.  Maybe leave is a carrot that they like to dangle?

Has anyone's sailor ever filed a special leave request chit to go out of the country (for vacation purposes)? Just curious to see how long it usually takes (we've been told to file at least 2 months prior to the targeted travel date, but just wanted to see what it was like for someone who has gone through the process).

Power School always shuts down for at least a week over Christmas.  They still have some watches to stand, though I believe they are scaled down a bit.  They are stood by people who choose to stay in town, or may be on restriction - I doubt anyone in Power School is denied leave during that period, unless they're on restriction for something.  There generally are enough volunteers to handle the watches.
