As long as they get it approved they can. For christmas boyfriend is going to Germany with his family to see his step sister and her husband. It got approved. They just have to show them their passport but it has to be in like 45 days ahead of time, the chit i mean. at least thats what he told me on the 45 day thing. he had to get it approved like 2 weeks ago
Well Ladies, this is my first Thanksgiving without my sailor. This is a rough one for me. He just graduated A School last week, but couldn't come home - has watch and stuff over the weekend. Instead, he's travelling today to visit his Army cousin at Ft. Benning for a couple of days.
I'm having a hard time realizing that he's "old enough" to drive however far WITHOUT his Mama!! I know he'll be in good hands and at least he'll be with some part of our family for Thanksgiving, but this is still tough. I know there will be other tough days too, but this is my first holiday without him. I also know most of you have been in my shoes and we all survive, but I didn't expect the emotions that I'm feeling. TOUGH!!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday - enjoy family and friends. Our house will be full for a couple of days - wouldn't have it any other way!! Blessings!
I think they can travel outside the country on leave. I was talking to a retired Sailor who told me Nukes will often go on leave when they have to sign their reenlistment papers so they can fly to certain zones outside the country to sign so that their bonuses are tax free.
Shannon, Sorry, but I don't know is they can travel out of the country while on leave...maybe Mark knows. I know that it can take a while to get a passport. I've read discussions on N4Ms about the need for our sailors to have one should they be at a distant port & need to come home for a family emergency. My son is going to get a passport application from the post office when he comes home for Christmas. There are also places that you can go if you want to get an expedited one, but I'm not sure how that works.
Congrats Martha Lee, I am so glad to hear the great news. It's refreshing to hear about Nukes that persevere & succeed.
Yeah Martha Lee...Congrats to your sailor and you.
Happy Thanksgiving to all here. My favorite memory was not from childhood. 20 years ago...Thanksgiving day we brought our sailor home from the hospital. What a blessing God gave us. My due date was Thanksgiving day but he was born 2 days earlier. This is the 2nd year we will not be with him for T-day or his B-day. Our (and his) excitment is building for our arrival in GC on 12/1 for the Power School graduation.
"alcohol protects you" that was a motto on our block :-)
Uh oh, dropped a member... :(
Our favorite Thanksgiving was when we invited all the single backstretch worker guys from the racetrack to our farm for dinner. I had put the turkey in the oven before we left for the track in early morning ... everybody walked in hours later and, no turkey smell. Oven had croaked. We ended up with cut-up crock-pot turkey, canned beef! gravy from mini-mart, and lotsa beer .. . one of the hot walkers called home (to Ireland, which doesn't even celebrate Turkey Day!) and others called Puerto Rico (what a phone bill that was!). Worst meal ever, Great fun. And luckily no one died of food poisoning (I think alcohol protects you!!).
We kept time shifting our Thanksgiving dinner through my HS and my early 20's. My big brother worked at Disneyland and he always had to work. But he and almost all his friends had the night before off. So, my brother and his friends had a "Turkey Trot" party at our house every year. They would have themes, put on skits, Jitterbug dances (this was in the 70/80's,,, so Mom & Dad held classes for weeks before the party, so we would know how to do the dance). We tried all sorts of days for T-dinner. Finally settled on the Friday, our family could recover from the party & see the in-laws on Thursday and then get together on Friday.
But, the most favorite memory was after the parties stopped and it was my Mom's last Thanksgiving. We knew we couldn't burden Mom, so we all brought components of the dinner. I had just split from first hubby, was in a house that I had never used that oven. Temperature guage was off and it heated up to 500, so Turkey cooked in about an hour. When I brought it to dinner, it was not hot enough. Early days of the microwave, brother shoved the whole thing in and zapped it.... ended up being the best Turkey ever. Still miss my Mom.
