Just had a photo shoot with our new EM3 and his college bound brother.  Yes in the heat, and several with him in uniform.   Photographer a family friend and I can hardly wait to see them all.  We were all dripping sweat and when Cole put on his whites, he said the temp is no different than GC.

Enjoying time with him home, but he is mad cuz his car isn't going to make the trip back to GC.  so he is trying to get a good flight back to GC (Charleston) on Sunday... with out breaking the bank and getting stuck in layovers..

Michimom, I am counting the days with you....

I have to ask a question again that I had posted a while back.  After my son leaves for A School from GL to GC on Saturday, Aug. 6th, we plan to drive to SC to take him his belongings.  Would it be best for us to wait until the next weekend (Fri. Aug. 12th) or is it advisable to be there as soon possible after he arrives?  In other words, when would he most likely be able to spend time with us once he gets to GC?  Any thoughts and suggestions?  Thanks!

I definitely wouldn't be surprised to see a whole class go to NY. Why the extreme change, I don't know.

For Aaron's class it was supposedly 1/3 to SC, 1/3 to NY, and 1/3 on grad hold (whom I think most went to NY).

Sometimes I forget (I'm not sure how!) that it's not just us moms who are counting down the days until graduation.  My son just posted on FB:
3.72 on RP 5!!! One final down, 3 to go. So close to graduation.

Guess he's excited, huh?  (I think RP is Reactor Principles.)

Comment by Sherri_M on July 21, 2011 at 9:17pm

@ William..yes, my son is an MM.  i think now that he is with the other guys that are in the same boat, and some on med hold there as well, it has helped his spirit.

He is hoping for aircraft mechanic now, so we will see.  Apparently they will work with them alot to get the right fit.  His dad ( my ex) is an aircraft mechanic for Delta, but he went the school route, not military route.  He said approx 90% of Delta's fleet is ex- military.  He also said airlines are much more apt to hire the ex-military guys over civilians, cause they are trained better/harder, etc...it's their butts if the aircraft goes down to do faulty maintenance, so those from the military are more thorough apparently.  So, guess he's going to follow in dads footsteps and not just step dads,  I think he would be good at it as well, and he's looking forward to Pensecola FL....so only time will tell if he's able to get it

oh, and yes, it will be a good career, in Delta's fleet they quit hiring mechanics a couple years after my ex was hired..... so approx 75% have 20plus years in.  maybe even 80%.

It was hot here as well, heat index at 105-110.  I hate heat!  I feel for those boys a girls over there.

And I hear that most of the next few groups will be going to BS as well.  When Sarah was there visiting MIchael it was "common knowledge" the next group would go.  Of course, as we've said, only the Navy knows..haha

Weather in So. Cal. is absolutely perfect, and it's a lot closer than Iceland!  But alas we leave here at the peak of the heat season elsewhere to attend son's PIR in GL, and then spend the rest of the month driving all over the midwest, southeast and through the desert states back to home!  Timing is everything... I just don't have it!  haha

Well, Rumor (with a capital R), according to my son, is that everyone in his class (that graduates in 3 weeks) is going to NY for prototype.  But, really, who knows?

This heat is ridiculous.  It's pretty much the same weather up here in Michigan as it is in GC.  I sure hope he does end up in NY--closer to us AND cooler, and if there's the delay everyone is talking about, he'll be there in the warmer months, too.

Comment by Emily-aaronsgirl11 on July 21, 2011 at 7:35pm

It seems like everybody is being sent to NY (aka Ballston Spa) right now...

And as far as who shuts down when... Most if it is rumors and you never really know which is true until something happens. Because the Navy changes their mind so many dang times... I have heard that the reactors up there tend to break down more and I know the last class a lot of the wives complained endlessly because of the staff. I only know what I hear about NY. Amanda lives there with her hubby now. She'd be able to tell you more.. especially about what there is to do!

I was told the same thing about the black flag, Emily!

I was so grateful to be inside an air-conditioned building all day (I was actually cold!!) and not outside in the 110+ heat with the "very dangerous" heat index we had today.

Comment by Emily-aaronsgirl11 on July 21, 2011 at 6:55pm

J's mom. In the morning, they always hang a colored flag. If it's a "black" flag it means that the heat is so extreme that they are not to be outside except to get to class and back to their barracks. Or at least that's how Aaron explained it to me last summer.

In other words, they don't PT outside. And unless they're in Prototype, they're inside the building for class the whole time anyways. For Prototype they get to endure the conditions on the boat. Aaron said it was about 100 degrees yesterday in Charleston and the boat was 10 degrees hotter. From what I hear, the boys will always be hot in the plant... Maybe that's why they chose Charleston as the training location? :)
