Mr Buzzbeck drove our sailor's car to him as early as possible while in A School. He's kind of a lone wolf and loved driving to the beach, buying a shrimp basket or fresh peanuts on the way, etc. A great way to unwind. It is an old beater. It was driven back home after prototype.

Chipmunk, your self description reminds me of what Mr Buzzbeck said 1 year ago at prototype graduation: "Wait, you want me to find 2 Navy moms in a crowd, called Jaycee and Kammom, wearing navy blue and white, huh?"

Mr Buzzbeck favorite place to stay was a Ladson KOA cabin. Clean, cheap, quiet.

Nancy Jo, so happy for your sailor and his family.

B's nuke, hope your back pain goes away soon. Seems like helping someone move often results in a back spasm.

My son is in power school. He did not have his own car before joining the Navy. He has no desire to have one now. His plan is to buy "an old beater" before prototype that he can turn around and sell when he is done. Honestly, I don't think he would buy one then if it wasn't required.

Freebird We shipped a car to our son a couple of months after he was in A school. He is now in Power School. Now with that being said, we are dealing with the state of Utah wanting us to have an emission test done. I contacted the DMV here in Utah and let them know that my son has the car in South Carolina and is NOT registering the car in SC. He maintained his Utah license and we maintained the registration in Utah as well. The car in NOT in my son's name, but he is using the car while in SC. We let the DMV know that the car was with our son who is only in SC for the military and school. They said we could apply for an temporary exemption. The problem is the state wants to know a date of when the car will be back in UTAH. We have no clue when the car or even IF the car will EVER be back in Utah.  It is so frustrating.

Mine did get his car right away. My daughter took it down to him. It meant a lot for him to have it.

Freebird my daughter got  her car in the middle of A School. She was really generous about running the kids without cars and many are willing to help out those without wheels.  There is no right or wrong answer, it's what is best for your sailor.

Mine didn't get his car until he was heading to Prototype!  We shipped it to him about a month before he left for NY.

Comment by Freebird on April 9, 2018 at 7:04pm

Ok, so how many sailors have cars at A-school?  Keep telling mine he does not need a car until he starts Power school, but not going over well.

Hammer, that is where we usually stayed. Not the cheapest, but good location, clean, comfortable, all nonsmoking. Right off the interstate. The only problem is the left turn leaving the Charleston Southern campus going out toward GC. Allow a few extra minutes at peak traffic.

I stayed at Villas too. Very handy for sailor, and large enough that I could have accommodated more people. Looking back I could have asked my ex since he came alone and I had 2 bedrooms. Another family there for grad was a nuke mom I connected with here (still around mommajo?) who also stayed at the Villas. We met up and we had a BBQ on their patio. Villas are dated but clean and well-supplied. You have a kitchen and laundry, can watch TV, dining room. I would recommend.

Planning my first trip to Goose Creek to bring my sailor his car in June. Anyone ever stay at the Wingate by Wyndham in Charleston?
