KayCee - well that is unfortunate!  Seems like there should be some way for him to cancel this.  I would have him contact the bank and put a stop payment on the auto w/d.  I'm pretty sure they can do that for him.  Hopefully when he gets back from his underway he can look into this.

About renters insurance - my son is still having it automatically withdrawn from his checking account although he graduated Prototype in June and has not been in SC since then.  He carried the required policy for the apartment but had to have all the names of the roommates on the policy.  Because all of the parties did not call and confirm that they were no longer at the residence, the policy cannot be cancelled. (per my son - and he also stated that he has no way of knowing how to get a hold of his ex-roomate/s)

He has been out of communication on underway's, so I haven't had a chance to talk with him more about this, but it continues to be withdrawn.  Bummer!!

Ladies, I'd like to give you something else to think about when it comes to insurance.  From what I've followed, the main focus has been on material possessions.  Renters (and homeowners) insurance also covers liability.  If your sailor is renting a home or apartment, and lets say, turns their back on the stove long enough for a fire to start, they're liable for the damage.  Or maybe they don't de-ice the side walk, and someone slips and seriously hurts themselves, same thing.  I could go on with examples, but I think you get the drift.   The landlords insurance will file a subrogation claim to get that money from your sailor if they don't have liability insurance.  Sounds like a one in a million shot, but it does happen.  My husband is an insurance adjustor and has seen some pretty ugly subrogation cases.  Just food for thought.

B'sNukeMom - I honestly don't recall what my son did during Prototype. We might have actually had a policy for him on a different insurance, or the father that actually leased the apartment and then they paid him, may have had the insurance. But yes! Renter's insurance is something that all of my children who have had apartments had to have. Just FYI, for non-military State Farm had a better policy than our regular insurance co. had when our girls needed it.

AP's*nuke*mom* - The impression I had from my son (I slightly changed his wording), they very strongly recommended renter's insurance to his INDOC group, and even sited some of the examples of ruined items that were named. So, I am assuming they should be able to get it. Combining with their car insurance will most likely be the cheaper option. - Also, my son was INDOC for a month waiting to class up. He had a lot more instruction in "life skills" than I believe they spend time on in the first week, when they class up, so some of this was drilled into them by others who had been there, done that.

Islandgirl - Big hugs to you and your daughter. The most important thing is for her to continue to be honest and own up to her actions. It sounds like that is the case, since she only received restrictions. Phone silence is so hard, but I am glad that you will be able to make a trip out to see her and have others along as well.

NukemomofC - Simply said, "That Sucks!"  Especially when our kids are working so hard to learn both Navy rules and the required academics, anything that goes awry is a terrible distraction.

All - Well...F had mast this morning...18 days restriction.  We just received a quick voicemail message from her letting us know and that she probably wont be able to communicate with us until after the 24th, :(

I went ahead and took a leap of faith on Monday and booked my trip from Maui to Charleston for the scheduled "A" school graduation date.  I'm bringing two close family friends along for support of both me and her regardless of the final outcome.

Does anyone have experience or knowledge of what takes place during restriction (I think she called it MILDIV)?

The rollercoaster ride continues and my heart & tummy feel it...

Can you get renters insurance when they are in barricks. When my husband was in they would not let us but that was along time ago and also marine/ army.

Happy Thursday all!

Chipmunk - I read your son's comment regarding the issue of renters insurance (in your discussion up above).  I agree that preparation is important in preventing issues but with that being said the renters insurance also covers theft which can be a little harder to prepare for!  B found that coverage was fairly inexpensive and when he moved into apartments (both in NY for prototype and VA) it was a requirement of the lease.  My youngest leases an apartment in NE and it's also required for his lease to have renters insurance.  It might not be required in A school or Power School but it's something everyone should consider.

NukemomofC - so sorry to hear that this happened! I'm sending prayers for your son - I know this must be so hard for him!

Comment by ProudOfK on February 6, 2020 at 9:23am

NukemomofC - so very sorry your son is going through that. That sounds just awful. They definitely don’t need the added stress.
