Welcome to our new members!! Feel free to join in our conversations, read along, introduce yourselves.

Islandgirl - Thinking of you and your daughter.

I have been busy with numerous other things but big news with my son's ship USS Ford - they have aircraft!!! Yea! I need to catch up on all the news with that. My sailor had another qualification test he had to take and I am waiting to hear from him as to whether or not he passed.

For those new to the pipeline - once your sailor is out in the fleet they will continue to have about two years of training, before they are senior qualified, at least per why I have understood from my sailor,

SubMom - Interesting on what your son was told about GC. Also, that he had inquired about RDC as well.  All I know is that they keep trying to get my son to do star reenlist, but he wanted to be out on a deployment at least once before making that decision or not. And it may be awhile before his ship gets to that point, but they are out training.

I will say the more I understand about how much training, time, and money goes into our Nukes and those as Reactor Operators, and then for them to have the turnovers like they do, when they just barely have them senior qualified, it makes a lot more sense to me why they push for them to add two extra years. I just am not sure that my son is willing to do that though. When we said good bye to the grandbaby at Christms, his niece, he commented "the next time I see her she may be three years old" - then it hit me and the sacrifices they make. The sacrifice my youngest made to only see his brother for 2 days of his leave, so that he didn't expose big brother to the flu and keep him from seeing his niece.

Lots to consider.

Oh and I forgot to tell you all that her PIR was October 25 and she is in“A” school for MM nuke subs

Well, my sailor daughter called after the review yesterday and was relieved that it went better than she expected. She kept her cool and ended up getting a pretty good pep talk from her petty officer. The backlog to go to the mast is a very long so no idea when that will happen. She says she will just keep her head up, study hard and do her job. We are so relieved to hear her spirits lifted, but...Does this roller coaster ever end?

Chipmunk - I think you are correct regarding BC. From what I can remember our son inquired into RDC at BC but further inquiry proved the Nukes usually didn't get that option. As for the pipeline he was told he would only have the option to return to GC. Now that he's in the fleet we will see if they say anything different. Needs of the Navy for sure!

New Adventures, my daughter did mention that if someone is masted they will not have the option for instructor.

From what I picked up in our conversation, options for shore duty are based on 1. Needs of the Navy 2. performance in the fleet/recommendation of superiors, and then maybe last of all preference.

I'm learning more and more as that time is drawing near for my daughter.

Islandgirl- thinking of your sailor.

Submom- as thing go on for your sailor I will be interested.  Mine is in A school but we talked STAR while he was on leave.  He has been told instructor as well but it is so early on the process.    Curious does anything in the before the A school or STAR dictate this conversation?  Scores, honors, degrees, leadership in  BC?

Comment by CSW on January 23, 2020 at 10:04am

Well, I understand there is a Nuke in charge of culinary on a boat because they were short leaders of that rate and his boat was in drydock so they moved him to an active boat to be in charge.  I also know they've asked my Nuke if he wants to get cross qualified as a diver because they need at least three divers per boat.  He's an ELT so it would give him more options after he's out.

SubMom - that is interesting. I don't know if my sailor would consider Star reenlisting or not if he thought he could be an instructor. What I do know is that when he was at BC, I think he had inquired if any Nukes ever went to BC as instructors and he was given the impression that Nukes were not allowed to do anything but Nuke jobs, so even being a recruiter seemed unlikely, unless it was in the Nuke office, maybe. Not sure but it will be interesting to see where they all end up at in a few more years time.
