Islandgirl - check into Southwest Airlines if you can. They seem to be the most flexible in terms of having to change travel dates. Whatever airline you go with, make you know their policy before purchasing. Graduations are always a cross your fingers kind of situation. Welcome to the Navy! Semper Gumby!

Sorry about the incomplete message.
Do you pay extra for changeable airline tickets or do you just purchase and pray???

So, all seems well with F now. She’s started the mechanics school portion and is pretty sure she will graduate with her shipmates. We believe that is the first Friday of March. She left Great Lakes on October 24. Does anyone pay the extra $$$ for a changeable or ref

Welcome to our newest member ~Socalmomto3! Please be sure to read the ***NEW MEMBERS*** info at the top of the page.  Lots of good info there.  Also take a look at the Pages (19) to the right under the member profiles - be sure to hit "view all".  And of course, feel free to ask any questions you may have.

And we are neighbors - I'm in Riverside and my mom lives in Beaumont ;-D

ShipofDoodles - I should know more for you after this weekend. I just got the A-school version of the "I'm a sailor" call because he passed "comp" this morning. So we are headed back to GC for Friday's graduation. My boy sounds so much better, relaxed and happy, than I have heard or seen in a long time. His class is not getting leave now, it is too soon after the December stand-down.
Are there any other Moms with kids in this class?

B'sNukeMom - Raw emotion, I am sure. I wondered if you were Lakers fans. My grandmother was way back when, she has been gone for a long time, but she always cheered them on. Heartfelt thoughts and prayers for the families.

Chipmunk - our family is huge Laker Fans (husband even has a personalized Laker license plate - along with an entire Lake memorabilia room).  B grew up watching Kobe play and has a Kobe jersey.  It hit close to home to say the least.  It's just so very sad for all the families involved.

This was a picture from 2011 when we got to go see the Championship trophies.

ShipOfDoodles - Yes, your son should have about 10 days of leave allowed. That seems to have been the normal - my son's class was the exception!! And I concur with ProudOfK on the 4 pm of graduation day. My son also stayed with us at the motel. We always stayed at the Days Inn there on Red Banks Road. It was the closest, cheapest and had breakfast. I didn't mind but my husband wasn't as happy, but I learned my lesson the hard way a long time ago, staying too far away from where I needed to be. I have the Wyndham rewards and after 3 graduations, plus motels on the way out and back, we had some free nights. Others have rewards programs also.

Comment by ProudOfK on January 27, 2020 at 2:25pm

ShipOfDoodles - when my so graduated A school he was able to leave the base with me and stayed with me at the hotel that night. My understanding is that their official leave actually started at something like 4 pm on graduation day. Some have flown out earlier but technically should not fly out until after that. Unless something has really change you should be just fine with Saturday flights.

Comment by ShipOfDoodles on January 27, 2020 at 2:09pm

Chipmunk: Thank you for the input! My son told me yesterday they are scheduled to graduate April 3 with leave up until (he believes), the 14th. Barring hurricanes, flooding, or setbacks, I am going to go ahead and make a reservation (ouch$$), and am hoping we will be able to leave and start home on Saturday instead of Sunday. He would ride home with us and fly back, and I am hoping for a two night stay, not three. (I can always hope, right? :-))

Regarding the Kobe Bryant news...a friend posted (credit Instagram@crimebydesign:

Leaving your home and getting back safely is such an underrated blessing.

Many of us have known the suffocating pain of sudden loss. May all of you, and your loved ones make it home safely.
