Thanks all,

We have a small family but they all want to go.  I have read were some families all go and the "extras' stay a the hotel and watch but then they all get to see the sailor after and at the airport.  It is either an all day drive or very expensive flight for us so it just does not make sense to me to go to Chicago for the off chance he has liberty for a lunch or dinner.   But I now have the info and they can make up their own minds.

We all set with IDs that count but will defiantly make sure the registration is in the car.  I have the hotel booked and now waiting to hear if he got the rating he wanted.  He seemed to think it was all set before he left.

Thank you all again for the help in easing the process for me.

bigsky21 is absolutely correct. You will never know until the last minute. The navy puts them into whatever seat is available on whatever flight at whatever airport. My son flew out sometime Saturday morning. It was so long ago I don't remember the exact time. The USO at O'Hare was super but it can get pretty busy. It's a nice place to hang out if you can.

At one time you could get a gate pass to accompany your sailor all the way through to wait at the gate. Anybody here knows those details? I didn't know about that when my sailor flew out.

Cjohanni, unfortunately you won’t know if it’s Midway or O’Hare until they get their orders....but they all pretty much head to the airport at the same time. We had a large group of parents waiting for the buses to roll up to O’Hare....I was there at 3am, but I don’t remember what time the buses actually got there. My son’s flight wasn’t until 6pm so I had the whole day to hang out with him at the airport....not the most exciting place to be, but at least we got to spend time together! Occasionally they don’t fly out until Sunday, just depends on what flights are available.

My son called home this weekend from BootCamp and said that he is definitely ET rate and he has to be on the bus to the airport 5 am on Saturday after graduation. We won't get to spend much time with him before he leaves, but hoping we can spend a little time with him at the airport. Anyone know what time their flight usually is on Saturdays to Goose Creek? Or if they fly out of O'Hare or Midway?

New Adventures - Keep in mind that BC PIR is live streamed for any family members that are unable to attend. Also, you should be able to go to the archives, and pull up your son's PIR so that you can send the link to others who were not able to attend.  I watched through the reply of PIR several times after we got home and wrote down all the times when my son was visible (he was a flag bearer) so that I could share that with family and friend and that way they could fast fwd or skip parts of PIR. It was also helpful to watch the PIR the week before (or I might have watched an archived one) so that I had an idea of what to expect from the ceremony, what the hall looked like and how things were laid out.

I like Chicago but the time is so short there, especially with those flying out - we made a total of 4 trips to GC with all but our oldest of my sailor's siblings at one time or another. I being the only one that made it all 4 times. And I still didn't see all that I wanted to visit. We also live a distance and drove 3 of the 4 times.

You may also need to show car registration and proof of insurance when you go through the gate. I had to do this once but they didn't ask the second graduation.  It's funny, sometimes they are really strict and other times just follow the basics.

For rental car I just showed them a copy of my car insurance via phone.

I think at boot camp registration you needed to do that if you drove through the gate.

There are no tickets for A school and Power School graduations. Your Sailor will have to provide a guest list for security. They send out invitations for Power School. Plan on having to show ID at the gate. After Oct. 1 2020, such ID would need to be REAL ID compliant, but then you would need that to fly there.

Hi All,

Odd question so far out.  How many ticket do you get for A school or Power School graduations?  I am trying to juggle who goes to GL graduation.  To many people.  I want to be fair to the family.
