I agree with Cindy- the Red Parrott was wonderful, very reasonable prices and HUGE portions- I think I had enough for three meals on my plate (of course, Tim finished up the 2/3rds I didn't eat, but I let him get away with it since it was the night of graduation ;) ). It's not tourist season, so Newport isn't terribly busy right now. We had a group of 7 and were seated no problem without reservations and there was plenty of space open at the restaurant. They had a good mix of seafood and "land" food ;) (Tim and I do not like seafood, but his family wanted some!) Tim also really liked the Black Pearl, though it was a little pricier. Also, Marsbars, her family, Tim and I, and another guy and his wife and mother in law ate at the Newport blues cafe- we had a HUGE group on a Friday night on labor day weekend (the end of tourist season so it was PACKED) and while other places had a two hour wait, they seated us right away. The food was good and it was well priced :)

Pat, I'm so happy to hear David passed RLP. Stay strong.
For you aviation families, Kyle says 03 has 15 pilots. I've also heard there are 39 OC's in 03, with 3 or 4 women. This is week 8 for them, with some big tests and inspections happening. Hope they secure.

Tarheelmom- I just realized I will be in Newport the weekend you are going- my fiance is there for SWOS and I just found out that he got me plane tickets so I can see him one last time before he deploys- what a sweetie :) So maybe we will see you at chapel!!!! :)
Have a great Super Sunday everyone!!! :) I'll be praying that everyone stays healthy at OCS!!

I asked my fiance, because I know there is a TON of stuff he read online that he would need, or that the Ensign at his recruiter's office said he would need/want, that he didn't use because of the changes being made at OCS. Going to cars, called POV runs, is really dependant upon your class team, but the growing trend is to not allow them. His class went on week 3 and then I think they *may* have gone one more time before being candi-o's. Some of the older stuff your LO may read will say to bring snacks/drinks to use while they go to the car- that is absolutely forbidden these days (Tim still has some of his snacks from back in May when he first reported...), as is using their cell phones when they go to car's- they use payphones to contact you, so DEFINITELY send your LO with some phone cards!
I know we sent my guy with a ton of things like an iron, ironing board, starch, detergent, etc. in preparation for RLP- however, there's always a ton of it floating around Regiment until they are allowed POV runs and going to the NEX- so, I would say bring some stuff for RLP, but you don't need to worry about spending a ton of money on it right now. A few little things to make sure they have- clear nail polish (used to handle any loose threads) and tide to go pens are especially helpful when dealing with uniforms. But if they forget something, the upper classes, especially their big brother class, will help take care of them. Tim's big brother class actually got fired from being their big brother class and was forbidden to talk to them because they did not take care of them- so, classes these days take care of each other! Also, Tim said to make sure they bring calf length athletic socks, not ankle length.
They are instructed to bring $20 in cash with them for the first week- Tim says to bring it as 1 ten, a five, and five singles because the haircut is 8 dollars and the barber shop is not always prepared to make change when you have a ton of guys paying with a 20!
Tim is actually on the road heading back to Newport for Surface warfare school right now, but once he's back on the computer, I will definitely ask him for a more comprehensive list of what to bring!

Leslie- Yes, absolutely, Brian should have off that entire time between change of command and Hi Mom's. Our guys did not, but their change of Command was moved to 10AM so that they could have an extra graduation practice because the Secretary of the Navy was coming- and even with that, they were done by lunch. I would absolutely absolutely encourage her to get that flight, and there's no reason he wouldn't be able to go and get her, even if she has to wait a bit. Sometimes, they will move change of command to earlier, I know ours was originally maybe going to be at 11- it just depends on the schedule of the regiment! The only thing is, after change of command they sign their commissioning papers which can take awhile, but they do it in alphabetical order. My guy is at the end of the alphabet so his wasn't done until about forty minutes after, but depending on your class size (his had 49 people) and where he falls in the alphabet, it really shouldn't take very long! Tim's sister and best friend flew in Thursday morning to Boston- in theory he could have gone and got them between Change of Command and Hi Moms, there was enough time, but they rented a car instead.
Just as a reminder to everyone- have your LO take his or her camera with them to change of command so someone can get a picture of them signing their commissioning documents!! You won't be able to watch and it is a special moment you'll want captured :)

Monday off is for Columbus Day- Tim reports to SWOS this weekend but won't have class on Monday because the whole base will essentially shut down for the holiday :)

03 News- They passed their drill inspection, my son says he thinks they did better than the score indicated, but I don't know what it was. Kyle is going to be a pilot, and there at least 3 or 4 more in that class. I heard from another mom they are starting to talk about finding a place in Pensacola. He's enjoying all the navigation related classes now.
So when can we start sending packages? My husband has a care package all ready to go.
Yesterday I flew out of Huslia with a mom on her way to Parris Island for her daughter's graduation from marine boot camp. She was so proud. There have been so many weather delays and cancellations she was afraid she wouldn't get a seat in time to make her connections. I would have given her my spot, but luckily there was one open seat.
In case you're wondering, I have a job that has me going from village to village in the Yukon drainage in the fall doing subsistence fishing surveys. Right now I'm on the Koyukuk river, just south of the Brooks Range.

I'll move wherever he is after I graduate- by then, he'll be through his second sea duty and onto shore duty so I'm not sure where he'll be! We're getting married before then, so we'll be apart for a couple of years of our marriage, but it'll be worth it :)

Well... haha. His ship is currently deployed. So, they sent him to norfolk on temporary duty for about thirty days until his SWOS date (which he'll actually go back this weekend to Newport for). Then, when he completes that, he'll fly out to meet his ship and help sail her home. Hopefully he'll be home by Christmas :/ but we don't know when she is due back. It's frustrating because we don't understand why he couldn't have done OHARP while waiting for SWOS- but none of the SWO's in his class got OHARP. Boo! He was able to take a few days of leave to come home and surprise visit me for a weekend, which was nice. He really likes Norfolk though. I went with him after graduation and stayed there for about five days until I had to get back to my hospital (I'm a student in vet school) and it was wonderful! I highly highly recommend the area- the base there is absolutely enormous and there is a HUGE navy community, on and off base! He gave me a tour of the base and he showed me a bunch of the ships- there are SO many there! DF is excited to actually get to meet up with his ship- right now he feels like he's doing the infamous "hurry up and wait" sort of thing!
Comment by Fur&FeathersDVM on October 7, 2009 at 9:15pm
Tim did the same thing when he first became a candi-o- he wasn't sure so he had me wait. It was hard because I wanted to spoil him and send him all sorts of goodies! But I only had to wait a few days and they stopped screening their mail so I was able to go ahead and send whatever I wanted :). It was worth the wait! :)
