OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

does anyone know how to purchase a NEX gift card online?

I'm leaving this group now too....blessings to your sailors in their Navy future!  :-)

MaVik94:  That is the sad part.....only about 10-15 percent of the SRs in a PIR group are represented on this site.  The recruiters sometimes tell the SRs about this site, but many times either don't, or the SRs do not pass this info along.  Not sure if my son was told before he left....but he never said anything....I found this site by googling after he left to see if there was a support group....back in 2009.  There is really no way to get the MeetandGreet info out to anyone not on this site.  Since that event is not Navy-endorsed, they would not communicate that to the SRs.

Thanks for sharing your experience and suggestions!

This by far was a GREAT experience being apart of this whole NAVY MIM group!!! We stayed at motel 6 and it was very clean and comfortable,,easy route to PIR,we got around pretty good,,,we went to the meet and greet and it WAS AWESOME,,great fun food and info for the graduation,,,the only thing was the next day everyone I met didn't even know about it they knew the website but said they had no idea but really wished the had,,, I feel someway the word should go out some how bout the Meet and Great it is too awesome to miss and it would help SGT to carry on the great event,,, it was truly a blessing to be there in Great Lakes Illinois,, I was lucky for my daughter got to stay at A school,,, I suggest taking the train to Chicago it right by PIR and u get the whole weekend to ride avoid traffic tolls and getting lost;)))) just thought I'd share hope it's helpful to anyone,,,CONGRATZ EVERYONE;))

To add to CatMom's post below...Any changes that we missed or got wrong during your PIR weekend?  Please share your experience.  We want to advise the PIR groups properly so your feedback is very important to us!  Please post!  What did we get right?  What did we get wrong?  How can we do better in advising the next groups?  Thanks, ladies, and congrats to your new sailors!
