And she selected a job of sonar technician!  We are all very excited and I cannot wait to see what lies ahead for her.  I am sure this field of work never crossed her mind before she visited MEPS. The next few months will definitely be interesting!

That's great news! When does she leave for bootcamp?

Congratulations to you and your future sailor!
Thank you!! She leaves 8/2. We are meeting with her recruiter again tonight! He stated this is a great job and I am hoping that she has found her niche! I am so excited for her.
exciting times for you and your daughter. . . .

The recruiter is right. . . hopefully he makes it clear that it is an extended journey.
and full of good things. . . but will require some patience and hard work.

Is she if for 4years or 6 ? That will have a lot to do with the length of her training.
From what I understand, she is in for 4 years and 2 years reserve. Is this something she should/could change?
Whether 4 or 6 years can depend on many things. . . Our son is happy with his 6 year choice, so far. He went active in Feb 09, and will finish C school and go to the fleet early this summer. A total training time, (with leave, holds, and holidays added in) of more than 16 months. The 6 yr sailors add extra electronics training and C school for a particular system specialty. Some will suggest that the sailor has more training, therefore more opportunity. The 4 yr sailor goes to A school after boot camp and then to the fleet ( training time more like 6 - 8 months). Of course, the specific specialty school and fleet assignment will depend on needs of the Navy at the time she has her PIR. Talk to the recruiter. You have some time while in DEP.
I was trying to figure out why there was such a large time range on C School! That explains it! :) Elizabeth is pretty fired up right and I will definitely have her speak to her recruiter. So much to do now!

Thanks for everything!!
My husband went in as a 4 year in Sonar tech and I was curious to what fleet assignment was?
My daughter wants to make the Navy a career. She joined for 4 years which she feels is a mistake now and wishes her recruiter had told her she would have more training as a 6 year. She/we should have asked more questions but it's hard to know what to ask. I wish I had know about this website before she did her final paperwork.
Thank you Bev. I really appreciate all of this wonderful advise. When we talked to her recruiter, he mentioned that she can add it after boot camp. But from what I am reading, she should do it before she leaves for boot camp. So much to keep track of!

Bev, how long has your daughter been in?
Melsmom, my daughter went to BC on 12/14/09 and graduated 2/12/10. It's my understanding that they can't add more years after boot camp. My daughter left for San Diego for STG four days after graduation. That's where she learned about 4Y vs 6Y STG. After talking with her mentor there she was told if she kept at least a 90 average in A school she would have a chance at going to A school. So, I believe it definately has to be prior to BC.
I meant change at C school with 90 average in A school.
Thank you so much! I will have to dig a little more abut she still has to do her final paperwork prior to her leaving for BC, so I think it is still possible. But I am sure she will have to do well in A school regardless.....competition!
