I just thought I would start this discussion as it seems things are beginning to ramp up for a possible deployment after the first of the year sometime. I know that there are many sailors that are stationed on the Bataan and others (like my son) that will become a part of the Bataan family as a result of this deployment. I know we can't talk specifics (names/dates/etc.) but thought it would be nice to have a place to post comments and questions as we move closer to its departure.
I know I am looking forward to hearing tricks and hints on the way things work with regards to the day to day happenings on the ship. I'd like to hear from those of you who have experienced a deployment or even long term separation from your sailor like mail call, communications, liberty, what they do on their "down" time between shift, etc.
As always, thanks for all the support to NavyforMoms!
My sons first deployment was with the Bataan in 2011, the really long one. 10 1/2 months. Left on his 19th birthday. Keep your phone with you every second and send boxes of goodies.
How do we send boxes of goodies?
Hey Caro - there are USPS One rate boxes specifically for the military and you have to call to get them. http://www.defense.gov/News/NewsArticle.aspx?ID=24758
To order the kit, call 800-610-8734. It's free, and contains: Two Priority Mail APO/FPO Flat Rate Boxes, Two Priority Mail Medium Flat Rate Boxes, Priority Mail tape, Priority Mail address labels, & Appropriate customs forms.
Also follow the mailing rules: https://www.usps.com/send/apo-fpo-dpo.htm
Don't forget to fill out a customs form!! USPS will not deliver to the ship without it.
I'm also getting the address, so I will figure out if I can post it here or not.
Hello and welcome aboard the USS Bataan. My son has been attached to the Bataan for the last 4 years. He just re-enlisted for another 4. We are all hearing the rumbles and are waiting patiently until we hear word. If there is anything you need answered we are hear for you.
My son is leaving this morn6
This will be my grandson's first deployment so I am interested in everything to keep us updated. Thanks for everything.
My Son is a Navy Corpsman serving green side as they call it with a Marine infantry unit. He will be attached to the USS Bataan due to the upcoming deployment in 2014.This is his second deployment with his first being to Afghanistan.
It is ironic that he has been in the Navy for over 3 years now and this will be his first time on a ship. I know that his care package needs will be different due to him being on a ship versus being in Afghanistan.
Any information would be greatly appreciated about what to send and how daily life on a ship is.
Thanks...Tenn Navy Mom
Got a text this morning that he is back on land. :-) He says he really liked the experience and is looking forward to deployment. I guess we have a lot to learn about the logistics of getting care packages to them all. He was able to email me, which was a huge relief!
Sally- it sounds like you've got the information on how these things work... looking forward to your help once they do deploy. :-)
If u have a Facebook the Bataan has a page... they post pretty much everyday! its the USS Bataan.... got to see my sons picture recieving a Good Conduct Award... it was great to see him as I haven't seen him since June!
Thanks didn't know about the family support page... waiting for confirmation on that!
