Hi, my son just landed in Japan this morning!! Though we have been a Navy family for 23 years this is a whole new ballgame with it being my son

I want to start preparing care packages to send to him - I assume it is going to be different items than I send my husband in Afghanistan, can I get some ideas?

Welcome !  Oh my goodness - both husband and son deployed!  Ouch!!  Thank you for your sacrifices - and best wishes to your son, as he begins his journey!!

Care pkgs - Pretty much same things as you would for your husband.  I think - I've never asked about ME pkgs!!  I believe there is a discussion already about what our sailors have enjoyed!!  After I post this comment - I will check it out as well.  Look at Discussions and read through...

Also, if you haven't joined already, there is a Japan Moms grp.  It may have more care pkg suggestions as well.  I remember one of these sites had an active discussion on this!  Anything is greatly appreciated!  You will have to share some of your favorite things to send!

Where is Japan moms grip?

The Japan Moms group is exactly the way you found this group and probably the PIR group that your sailor was first with. I think I see some of your frustration at this site. Some of the posts that you have been replying to in other discussions are 2-4 years old. If you look by the name of the person who posted the question or the answer, there is a "time stamp" that tells you the date the post was entered. If you have a specific question or comment I would go to the main page where everyone posts and alert them that you have left a comment or question in one of the discussion areas. I hope this helps you.

Hello there! My son is also on the USS George Washington(CVN73) I can relate with you. My husband was in the Navy for 29 years and is now retired. Now that my son is gone, it is hard. He left to Japan Thanksgiving day and been there since. He has been in the Navy a year now, I advice you to send things that he likes. Like our son likes, beef jerky, peanut butter, rolling stone magazines. They love baked cookies from home. I will post pictures of the care packages that my daughter and I sent to him. We put our own little touch in to the boxes by decarating them. He LOVED them! Specially because my daughter (his sister) and him use to watch The Walking Dead program together and his sister knew he would love it. Hope this helps a little. Just realized this posting was from 2years ago, but if your son is still in the navy, hope that things have gotten easier for you. Thank your husband and son on the behalf of my family for their service. Have a Blessed and safe Memorial Day weekend.
God bless! Husband in afganistan and son i japan!!!
Welcome... My husband was in for 24 years but I can tell you it's a whole different kind of missing when it's your baby!!!

My Son just arrived this morning.. We both are miserable.. Hate he is so far. He hates being there , I hate that he is there!! Not sure he will make it and I am devastated

My Daughter just arrived in Japan over Memorial Day.   She flew out to Japan the next day... now we wait to see when she leaves to meet up with her GW ship.   The Time difference takes some getting use to ....   Best time to text is early AM when I am waking up and she is going to bed...  I think she is going sightseeing later today/tomorrow in Toyko.   She is so excited to be on the move soon... she wants to get this Navy life started.   She should be flying out to Guam or Australia soon to meet up with the GW then travel back to USA.    Hopefully we can see her when she arrives in the USA.   Cheers !
