Both yourself and your son can only live in military housing if you re her official dependents.  She can only live off base with you when given permission, which is usually only given to married sailors, or those E-5 and above.

Are you a dependent?

I never knew as mom, I could be HER dependent. Is this something I should be looking into? Im just trying to figure out the best way to do this. Should I just try to get regular housing somewhere else? Im lost.

If she provides more than 50% of your support, them you may be eligible.  There is a lot of paperwork, and they look very closely at the situation, but she could check it out.   She will need to ask legal or personnel how it works.  I had a friend in Japan who had her mother as a dependent.

Otherwise, you can find a place to rent in the area.  While she might not be able to love with you as a student, she could spend some of her free time with you.  At training commands, that takes a few weeks as they earn privileges.  In the fleet, things are a bit different.
