My son will be shipping out on December 15th to boot camp.  I am having a very hard time with this.  I have so many questions about that day and I'm not sure if I should call his recruiter.  He doesn't share much with his dad and I.  He just keeps saying that he will be leaving on the 15th.  Do we go with him, can we go to the airport and say goodbye.  every time I ask my son these questions,  he's like mom...I got this. don't worry.  but I do worry.  any suggestions?????

My son left on the 17th.  We stayed with him the entire day until he boarded the plane.  United allowed us gate passes to go through security.

Good luck!

of course you worry...you're a mom!!! Your son will leave home the day before to stay overnight at a hotel and then the next morning will be taken to MEPS to do his swear in. YOu can go to MEPS and be with him there until it is time for him to get on the bus that will take him to the airport. I'm not sure if parents/family are allowed to be with them at that point but I strongly suggest you call the recruiter and ask. If you can be there at MEPS when he does his swear in, I would definitely encourage you to do so. Spending any time with him up until the last minute is worth it...after that, it will be a roller coaster of emotions! You will receive your "kid in a box" within 10 days and the form letter as well, and this will have his address where you will be able to write him letters. The first phone call will be the 30 second scripted call the night he actually arrives to RTC (Recruit Training Command). and then after that, the  next call will be in about 3 weeks. Hang in there sister! Spend as much time as you can on this website and dig around to learn as much as you can! there is A LOT to absorb.

sorry, to clarify, the form letter will not come with the box. It will come in the mail separately. Someone will need to be home to sign for the box, unless you leave a note for FedEx.

Hi, my son left Nov 10.  He was in a hotel the night before he left and then the next morning at MEPS, we were able to be there when he did his swearing in and then had lunch with him.  He left straight from MEPS on a van to Great Lakes (only 5 hour drive) and we were able to walk with him to the van, but not talk to him.  He then was able to text us and call us on the drive there.

My son is leaving on the 15th also.  He has to be at his recruiter on the 14th and stay over in a hotel and then do his final swear in on the 15th. I plan on being at this.  It will be the last time I see him for 8weeks!! So proud of him yet so nervous! He is my baby and my only son and I am so worried!  I would go to his final swear in if you can.
