My son is being pinned as chief and is stationed 14 hours away. I am very proud of him and I understand this is a milestone in his career. However it is on a Wednesday afternoon and it would be very difficult for me to be there. How necessary is it for me to be at this event? If it is necessary what should I wear? Thank you

"Tested. Selected, Initiated......"  Only in the Navy and Cost Guard will you hear those words (not so much Initiated any longer).  Navy chiefs are selected by their peers, Senior and Master Chiefs.  The promotion to Chief is the biggest milestone in one's Navy (Military) career. Our daughter is being pinned at Damn Neck, Virginia September 16, 2015.  Where is your son being pinned. Congratulations!!

Your son can get a copy of a video that will be taken so you will be able to enjoy the ceremony....................

Thank you so much for the input. My son was at Damneck but is now in Gulfport. Good luck to your daughter! The DVDs is an awesome idea.

Many thanks Buckeyebil! I did some homework and I am pulling out all the stops to be there. It is such an honor for him I had no idea. But I will get there if I have to walk:) I have ordered him the 1893 coin and a chief ball cap. His wife and children got him a "coin box" I am excited to get there. If it hadn't been for your comment I may have underestimated the situation and blow it off. Thanks Again!!!

Mommabear,  remember they can and probably will keep the CPO SELECT 's  till midnight on September 15, 2015. Our daughter has had to muster at 0530 every day of CPO 365 Phase ll and I expect no less on Tuesday 9/15.  So don't expect to see much of your son until after the pinning ceremony. I have a brass chief's anchor that I have engraved  with my dad MMC (Pearl Harbor Survivor)  me  HMC, My brother AGCS and  my daughter  ITC. Enjoy the events..............our daughter's group will bury their white hats on the  15th so much Navy tradition.

Congratulations mommabear! I will add my two cents for what it is worth. We are still less than a year in but my son recently graduated from a Spec Ops school. His ceremony was also mid week and it seemed almost not worth the time to go as it involved several flights and a rental car, but I really wanted to be there and I am so glad I went. I was given the honor of pinning my son and it still brings tears to my eyes. About half of the class had family there and even though the whole thing was less than an hour, I would not have missed it for the world. Your son's accomplishment is significantly greater and I do hope you are able to be there to witness it. Bravo Zulu to you and your family!
