During boot camp, does a recruit ever get access to Facebook? We've had a relative pass away the day our son left and I do not want him to find out on Facebook. We are still torn as to tell him or wait until after graduation in March...
Any advice?

The recruit might get access to facebook when the division is rewarded with Ricky Heaven. Most won't get on facebook though. It would be a very slim chance that he would get time on the computer before PIR. Have you let others who may write him know not to reveal this information? Did you discuss ahead of him shipping how to handle bad news? If you did, then you know what he wanted, but if you did not, then you must use your best judgement to decide whether to call the Red Cross to pass on the news or to wait and share the news after PIR on your own. If you do choose to call the Red Cross, then you will need your recruit's SS number and the name and contact information of someone official who can verify the death. The other info they will ask you should be able to give without looking it up.

I would suggest using Red Cross. It will be sad and depressing for him, but he will have the distraction of boot camp to get him through.  Otherwise, waiting will mean PIR is about sad news rather than a celebration. Of course, you know him best, so use your best judgement.

My parents once waited for my holiday leaveleave to break some bad news, ruined my Christmas. I wish they'd let me know, so I could deal with it before trying to relax and enjoy my family.

Thank you both. We discussed sharing bad news during boot camp and he only wanted to know about immediate family. So I am abiding by my recruits wishes. I just don't want him to read it on Facebook. We are waiting to tell him well after graduation... Why ruin such an important day with a tragic memory... Social media has its good and bad points.
