OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

Thanksgiving at Great Lakes, 1980

Since that time of year is nearly here, I thought I'd bump this up.

One year in Great Lakes, there we were, stuck in the barracks. One of the guys had family in the area, his mom told him he could bring a few of us home. He and I were dating, his buddy was dating my roomie, and three of his friends were stuck at Glakes for the holiday. We all had liberty for the entire weekend so it was decide that we'd all go to his place for dinner.

The problem? The only car we had to carry the SEVEN of us was an old, old VW Beetle. We piled in, a driver, a guy in the front seat with a girl on his lap, three guys crammed in the back with me stretched out on their laps. It was ... cozy. Which was good, the heater didn't work. And then, halfway there on the drive, it began to SNOW. Heavily. We slowed down. The snow was so heavy the passenger-side windshield wiper went flying off. We stopped, and pointed the bladeless wiper into the air, it wiggled back and forth, leading the way. The snow was awful, but we weren't turning back.

We arrived safely, watching us climb out of that bug, it must have looked like a clown car! Those were burly young men, and my roomie was five foot seven, not a little girl by any means.

Dinner. His mom had prepared extra, but we didn't much care. But man oh man, no disrespect, but this woman was the WORST cook in the universe. Even a meal prepared with love was inedible. The turkey was both dry and undercooked, I have no clue how she managed that. The stuffing was a weird gray mass, the yams simply heated from the can, and the mashed potatoes were glue. Covering everything with gravy didn't help, the gravy was from scratch and she forgot to thicken it .... I didn't know the green bean casserole was green beans until my date told me. The pies were good, they were store-bought. Still, I was grateful for the invitation and the company, if not for the food itself.

We laughed and talked and played games and watched football, all of us were old enough for a few glasses of wine and brandied eggnog ... and whiskey, face it, we were sailors on a day off. It was the worst Thanksgiving dinner I've ever eaten, but it was one of the best Thanksgiving Days I've ever had.

Sounds like that "Mom" wasn't mid-western-born-and-raised kind of a cook......every gal growing up in the 'Midwest' Knows hows to cook for a crowd for sure! Hahaha....But she sounds like a sweetheart..Bless her and all the moms who take sailors 'under their wings' for a holiday meal!

we had a great time last year feeding our group from a small and not a very well equipped kitchen, but the guys and one gal really had fun.
