Hi, I was just wondering if they are allowed to take anything with them to A School such as a cell phone, laptop, their own clothes, etc. If so, do we bring that stuff with us to graduation? Thank you for your input!!

I peeked at your profiel page...so he's leaving in April? Here is a group for you to join to connect with April DEPers  http://www.navyformoms.com/group/leavinforbootcampinapril

If his A school is in Great Lakes, then if he is Grad and Go (He'll find out a few weeks before he graduates) he can have his stuff immediately, if A school in GL: and NOT G&G...there are storage lockers you can rent till he's able to have them.

If his A school is elsewhere and he is G&G...you can meet him at the airport and give the stuff to him there, If A school elsewhere and he is not G&G you'll have to ship it to him after you get his address

They won't need their civvies for  a few weeks, they have to class up. Usually they canhave their laptop, cell immediately

Once they class up (my son's A school is 13 months, he classed up in a few weeks), they can have whatever they want as far as clothes, electronics, etc.  We waited until he classed up before we sent the laptop along with some jeans, tshirts, polos, etc.  He bought a phone out there because the T Mobile reception was not good on base and because he wanted to start building his credit and a cell phone seemed like a good place to start.

Hi everyone, my son doesn't leave for BC until April 20th.  His A School is in Pensicola FL and I think its about 6 weeks long.  How do I find out if he's a G&G?  Do they have a decent amount of freedom in A School as opposed to BC?  I know there's no freedom at BC nor much time to call or write.  I hope its different when they go to A School so I can talk to him more.  Also what is "class up"?  Thanks for helping me with all of this!!  I really appreciate it!!

cathy    your rct will let you know if he is G&G about 4 or 5 weeks into boot camp.

yes A school is much more relaxed then boot camp. Classing up is when they are given more privileges such as wearing civvies, able to leave tha base, drive a car, etc

Thank you for all this information!!  I would be totally lost without this site.  I feel as though I will be more prepared for when he goes.  Its funny how I keep giving him tidbits about the information I'm getting here.  I'm telling him what to be prepared for as opposed to him telling me!! LOL  Thanks again!!

My sailor says that I used the wromg trem. Class up is indeed when they start classes. I meant, he said, phase up. There are classes and on line training that they must complete when thwy get to their A school. Depending on how much they have finished and the command, they gain more and more prividges. For example, my son got to his A school on Feb 9. He had to wear his uniform at all times until he satisfied some requirements, then he could wear civis on base but uniform off base, etc. By the time he classed up in mid Marche, he could wear whatever he wanted outside of class and inspections.
