Hello, my child is currently in boot camp and I have spoken to him twice (three including the "I arrived okay" call) and both my husband, daughter, and I have recieved a letter from him.  The first call he seemed a bit down as well as his letters stating the PT part is what he expected and is fine with but the emotional part is really hard for him my SR has only been away and not seen us for 3 days but we still spoke with him every night.  I have been strong around my SR and he has only seen me cry once (when he swore in and boarded the shuttle).  Although I have been strong around him I have been an emotional mess since the day he told us he was joining the Navy (cried the whole weekend).  I thought I was getting stronger but during his last call he informed us that he had his two lower wisdom teeth pulled and was a bit swollen.  My worries are I have been reading that they only have one day of recovery and then they have to go back to training.  I know everyone is different as to how their bodies react to such trauma of having your teeth pulled and was wondering if someone doesnt completly heal do they still make them go back to their daily routine?  When I had mine pulled on the first set it took two days for me to heal and feel better however on the second set I was eating solid food by the end of the day. However, my husband was different when he had his pulled he took about 4 days to feel a bit better and open his mouth wide enought to eat solid food.  I felt so helpless as a mother and cried and once again started feeling down and sad.  Please calm a worried mom's nervous down has anyone's SR been through this?

Hi, I'm new my very first time of ever using this site.  Am I in the right location in order to find out when my son's division will be going to Battle Stations 21? His Div is scheduled to graduate on Jan 31 but I have not heard anything from him since early Dec

I am sorry if I am in the wrong location but I just read your post and I think that your son will be fine.  I think at first it is an adjustment.  When my son first called, he sounded really down but I told him that it was going to be ok. I am very strong in my faith but sometimes I start thinking the worse and have to talk myself into knowing that he will be fine.  I pray everyday, practically all day especially in the beginning.  That it what helps me to get through the days.  I visit this site almost every day and it also helps me to know that other mothers/parents are going through the same emotional experience that we have.  I have been reading a lot of posts where they have been pulling wisdom teeth and from my understanding they give the SR two to three days to recover.  I would think that if they required more time they perhaps it would be approved but I don't know details for sure so maybe someone else could validate.  Best wishes to you and your recruit.

Thank you Marolyn your comment has helped me so much.  Knowing you have read post that state SR have had up to 3 days of recovery it makes me feel that it really depends on the person and how their body heals to the removal of their teeth.  This site is amazing in helping one feel better.  Just knowing that what you are feeling and going through is normal.

My son went to Great Lakes last June (2013) and graduated 8/13.  The first two weeks were awful for us as parents.  I relied on this site for so much information/support along with personal prayer. I watched the You Tube Video that shows exactly what they go through when they arrive at Chicago O'hare Airport--my son said (afterwards) that the Navy sugar coated it a bit.  The video made me even more sad.  I waited desperately for the box and the first letter. The letter was pretty neutral; he didn't seem too sad/worried--just telling me not to worry.  As Mom's we tend to worry way more than they do!  The letters came regularly every Thursday.  As time went on, they became more positive...but he did complain about a lot of things :)  It got much easier for me after the fourth week.  The first call came when he had to get a root canal; he ran a few miles to get to the dentist on base (in pain), ran back after the procedure and then it became infected twice (again, he had to run over a mile to the dental office in major pain!!)  My SR didn't get any time off.  They learn early on they don't want to spend time in the infirmary because it could move back their PIR date. It all is worth it--especially when you get the official "I am a US Sailor" call after Battle Stations.  I will never forget that day for the rest of my life! The PIR was breathtaking and very emotional.  So, hang in there--it is all worth it in the long run. Continue to support one and other--it really does make a difference :)

Just saw your post and had to comment:

My son had all 4 pulled and was in the 800 special ops division and he was out running 1 hour later still bleeding. I thought that was crazy, but he has lived through it, and through SERE and everything thrown in his path. Once you son gets a little more use to the navy life things will get easier for him give him a month and his letter will go from not so great to better and by the end great!  you will be so proud of the man he has became in the short amount of time he is there, and he will be proud of himself also. Hang tough I think sometimes it is harder on us moms:) My son is on his first deployment and I still worry, but he doesn't:)

I too am new. My son doesn't leave for BC until May. He was scheduled to have all 4 wisdom teeth out in December 2013, but when he signed his Navy contract in August they told him no, not to remove them in December, they would remove them in BC! Yikes. I'm already worried because I had a hard time when I had mine removed. It doesn't seem like 2 to 3 days is enough time to recover. This is just one of my many worries! Lol.

My son asked me to have his taken out last summer. I said no....your wis teeth are fine....no pain no need to remove. But the navy took two anyway LOL! Fortunately h recovered quickly. Plus I read kids at 21, their wis teeth aren't fully attached, for lack of better word, hence easier to remove, unless impacted. My son graduating 2/28. First call he sounded down, but last Sundays call was a thousand percent better. I too cried at swearing in and hid it from him. Trying to be strong and getting stronger every day and you will get stronger too. I also find myself saying Hail Mary's constantly! It helps me and I hope my SR is getting strength from my efforts. BTW I also broke down the evening I found out about tooth pulling. Broke my heart not to be there, but after Sundays call I know he's doing fine....even with two less teeth!

beausmom, my son said if he could do it over again he would have had them out before he went to boot camp:) The reason he didn't is because he wanted to save me money, but I wish we had just taken care of it so he had time to lay around and heal. there is enough trama at bootcamp.

Thanks Omama. I guess because when he went for his physical at MEPS he still had them, this was put into his medical file and it can't be changed. His recruiter said "oh well save your parents the money". I would have been MORE than happy to pay for the removal so he could have time to recuperate at home and less on his plate at bootcamp. Hopefully he will bounce back quickly :-)

Hello Ladies! My son had his wisdom teeth out in bootcamp. It is a preventive measure. I never had mine out. Mine flared up while he was home on leave before deployment. He was a sweetie, and saw me suffering. It's way worse when you're older and possibility of complications. Judy is right...it will feel like a rollercoaster!  I trust the wisdom of Navy Sisters like her for sure! Sending prayers and well wishes your way today and forever for all your SR's and Sailors!
