Hi, how are your doing?  Don't worry about your son, when they travel you might not hear from them for a while.  When Stephen left for Naples, he missed all of his flights the first one was late so he arrived in Naples 2 days late, the Navy was calling my house looking for him. LOL  Your son will be fine.  What base is he on?  Stephen is on Capo, it is one of the smaller bases and all single people.  State Side is for families and Corpmen.  So how is your son doing now?

Hi Doreen:

So glad to hear from you and glad it was not bugs!! My son is graduating Boot Camp on 4/23/2010. I"m going to Great Lakes to see him graduate and I'm soooo excited. Then he comes back to Lackland, San Antonio for A School. I'm so blessed because we live in San Antonio and I hope to see him while he is here. Do you remember exactly how long A school lasts and will he have liberty while in A-School?

Two weeks isn't to bad. Michael was on one that was over 90 days straight. Those get a bit tough. I hope he enjoys it. He is going to see a lot of different places and some really different things. Stop by anytime to chat. Take care, Laura

Hi Doreen, Just checking in to see how Taylor is doing in the land of sand as my son calls it. I hope he is adjusting well to the heat and the different culture. Michael left there on April 24th and we picked him up April 25th. He reports to San Diego next week for 4 years. I just wanted to stop by and say hi and see how you are doing. Take care, Laura

Hi Doreen, I'm so glad that you had a good time on your visit to California. We have been to the zoo since our honeymoon 25 years ago. As soon as Michael is settled in down there we will go down and spend a few days with him. Don't know if we will stay on the base or not. Michael took his petty officer exam and if he passes he may be able to live off base.
So is Taylor now in Bahrain? Have you heard from him yet? I hope he is doing well. Michael should be home at the end of April. He is busy getting all of his paperwork ready for his transfer to San Diego. He is going to need a uhual plane to get all of his junk home. They seem to become electronic freaks when they get there because stuff is so cheap.
Is the weather holding up back in Iowa? It has been really beautiful here in California. But we sure could use some more rain. Well hope all is well. Write when you get a chance and let me know whats happening! Take care, Laura

We recently stayed on the Base on North Island and the accommodations were nice. You have a kitchenette in the room so you can do your own cooking. They have free movie rentals for you also. It is about 6-8 blocks from the gate. I don't know if a taxi can come on the base, but you can get to the get to get into the taxi. They also have a bus line that will go from the base to just about anywhere. My son lives in Imperial Beach, which is about 15-20 minutes away. The price is very cheap for staying in the housing on North Island - $27 a night. You should call ahead to reserve the room. I can't remember all of the information - Gateway something. Have your son check into it. He can also reserve the room for you. If I find the information I will get back to you.have a nice time in San Diego. You or your son can get discount tickets at the family service place on the base.

Hi Doreen, How are you? Your trip to California must be coming up soon. When are you coming to our beautiful state? You will have to let me know how it goes so I can make plans to see my son when he gets down there. He is finishing up his last mission and is going to take his Petty Office exam this month. Then he just packs his stuff and he should be home anywhere between April 23 and May 22. How is Taylor doing with the big guns in San Diego? Hope all is going well. Hope to hear from you, take care, Laura

Hi Doreen, how are you? How is Taylor enjoying beautiful San Diego? Michael is back in Bahrain now but we are on the count down and soon he will be in San Diego for two whole years. He has to report there by May 22. How is your trip to California coming along? You will have to let me know how your motel turns out. We are thinking that we could just fly down there for the day when Michael finally gets there. We are only an hour flight away. I put up some new pictures of his visit home. The small silver car is his new toy that he bought just 4 days before he left. The rest is family. I love the one of Michael and my daughter Brianna. I don't get to have them together very often. She works for Cold Stone Ice Cream so that is why the picture is taken there. Well I hope all is well with you. Write back when you have time. I always love hearing from you. Laura

the Navy Lodge was great! there is a pic of it on my page. it is between the air strip and the ocean, so ask for an ocean view if you want one. we had to go to the pass office to get id's for the time we were there, my son had to be with us for that and also to check in to the lodge. you need to get to the pass office during business hours to do that, otherwise im not sure how easy things will be to get on base.

We drove there from here in AZ so we had our own transportation. i heard there is a fairy from the island to san diego. the lodge is at the furthest point of the base so it would be a very, very long walk from the entrance of the base. is your son stationed on the North Island base or one of the other ones? if he is on one of the other bases you are going to be far apart from one another.

hope that helped some, let me know if you have any other questions. have a great trip!

Hi Doreen, there is a group for mothers of kids stationed in California but not a specific group just for San Diego. At least not that I have seen. Michael leaves this friday and I am really starting to stress. Did I tell you that he wants to volunteer for the convoys from Kuwait to Iraq? They seem to be pretty safe now but still its just one more thing to have to worry about. I guess he is tired of the water. How is Taylor doing? Is he enjoying San Diego. It is probably one of the lovelyiest spots in California. I can hardly wait until Michael gets there for his next duty station. Any word on Taylor's assignment yet? At least for now he can enjoy our beautiful weather and the beaches. It is a great base! Take care and hopefully soon I will have some new pictures posted. Laura

Hi Doreen, he is going to love San Diego. Michael did his big gun training there. Not surprised about his being on hold or that his orders might change. Typical Navy. Its a case of hurry up and wait. You would think that after two years I would be used to that but it still drives me nuts. Let me know what they say. I'm sure Taylor will do well where ever he ends up. I will definitly stay in touch, Laura

Hi Doreen, Michael is still home with us and I really don't want him to gack to the Middle East. He wants to volunteer for the Kuwait to Iraq convoys as protection for the transports. Just what I need, more gray hair and my stress level to go up a notch or two. I don't know why he cant go out to sea for 30 days or just stay on base. As far as the taxes go, I did Michael taxes for him when he was stateside for a while. California has a simple tax sheet for those people whose taxes are simple. Once he was in Bahrain I didn't have to worry about it anymore. According to the Department of Defense Bahrain is considered a "war zone" so they don't pay federal taxes there. It worked out that Michael was home to sign his tax return so it wasn't an issue. There is always someone on the base who can help them with that stuff. Taylor can get his W-2's from the internet. He might even be able to get them done before he goes. Then for next year you only need to worry about the first couple months of the year. Have Taylor check with his commander, they will know where to send him for help. I will have new pictures up soon. Let me know when Taylor goes over to Bahrain. Take care, Laura

Hi Doreen, we just got back from Disneyland today. We have our son here at home until Feb. 6. Then he goes back to Bahrain until May then he goes to San Diego for two years. When does Taylor leave for Bahrain? Is he getting exctied to see the world? We figured out that Michael has been to 4 different continents since he has been over in the Middle East. Let me know how its going! Laura

Hi Doreen,
Yes, I believe he is, he told me it was classes about weapons etc. So, I bet this is the combat one. I think he is going over to Bahrain around February 13th?
