The purpose of this forum is designed to inform those parents of sailors who aspire to the rate of GM. It is intended to aide parents with what to expect once their sailor graduates boot camp (BC)..also known as PIR, and moves to the A-School side of the base. Questions will be answered by the family of sailors who are training to be GMs. If we don't have the answers, we will get them for you.

Please introduce yourself if your sailor is in the GM rate and provide background on your sailor so that we can get to know you. If you have specific questions about these ratings, and you ask them here, Will and Hoppi will be able to answer your questions. This will help all of us because the answers won't disappear pages down in the general forum.

I want to give Gary T. credit for this great idea; he just hired me as his secretary to put it together. So, jump in and we hope this will be helpful to all of you.

Hello Kari, welcome to our group. I am sure you have many questions. May I suggest you read all of the posts in this discussion group. You will find time lines for classes, hold times and much more. Class times are constant with hold times between classes and shipments to new assignments being more fluid. Please read then ask away, someone will answer any question you may have or find someone who will. Gary T.
B/Z Gary.....I'll send Kari a welcome, too.....Thanks for backing me up on here. Vee
Hi Kari and a warm WELCOME to our GM forum. Gary T posted very good info for you. We are here for you and you will get your questions answered. I will add you to our family list along with your son....So, climb aboard and hang on for the ride. Gary T and I have about 15-16 months behind us and both of our sailors are in San Diego now after spending a little over a year in GL....a lot of that time was on hold. I understand the hold times are not near as long now as they were last year. So, remember, no question is a dumb question and ask away. Hugs, Vee
Hello, I have a recent PIR this past weekend 2/26/10 and heading to gunners mate A school. At this point I don't know what to expect...do we get another graduation. How long is A school - looks like it can vary in time. My son is Dan and I'm Trish.
Trish, glad to see you made it. I answered in the general discussion that you check this discussion topic out. Please read all contained here within. You will find many many of your questions answered. Now to answer your most recent questions. When a sailor graduates GM A-School it usually is an informal affair (short duration). Class size seems to be about 12 to 14 students. Parents may attend with prior approval. (requires access to base). Some parents do attend, my son didn't want family so we passed. A-School seems to be around ten weeks in length with a final eleventh week used for FATS (Firearms Training Simulator). Sailor will pick assignments according to class standings. #1 in class chooses first #2 second and so on. Not all assignments have a C-School requirement and some will have C-School after reporting to there fleet assignment. Please read all information and then ask. I don't want to confuse you by explaining anything out of sequence. Gary T.
Hello Trish....Sorry I am a little late in giving you the warm Navy Mom/Grandma/Dad welcome on here. I will add you and your son to our roster of GM families. Gary T and I have been a member of this site when it was just in the beginning stages. My grandson and his son went through GL together and are now both in San Diego for C school for VLS. Gary has given you some great information and as time goes on, things do change and time frames change. So, when you get a chance, I'd say look over the posts here in this forum, then start asking questions. Our sailors have been out of GL since December, but we can help you through your next phase of being a Navy Mom. So, again, WELCOME and we are glad you joined us....Let us hear from you. Hugs, Vee
Hi Kelly, my boy is in the last month of his C School in Dam neck. What is your son going for in Norfolk? Brett is currently schooling with 3 or 4 Sailors from GL. Bill
Hey Kelly, Brett is doing VLS (vertical launch systems) at Dam Neck Naval Base. His school is 5 months long. He will be reporting to the USS Donald Cook guided missile destroyer in mid April. So I don't think they will be crossing paths. Norfolk is a HUGE base. We toured a small bit of it when Brett went down in Oct. Wait until you see the size of the Enterprise. OMG! It is incredible. There were 2 carriers in port when we were there and the site of them just blows you away. You never get the full effect with pictures. I can't wait to go back. We are hoping his CO will allow us a tour of the ship.Keep in touch. Good luck and Godspeed. Bill
Kelly, best of luck to Jake. I am sure he will do his best at whatever he chooses. It sure does sound exciting to be a part of a big ship. I am sure you have never been prouder of Jake. Give him my best. Gary T.
Hi Kelly,
So if Jake is going to the Enterprise than he more than likely doesn't have a "C" school. He'll be reporting straight to his ship after he graduates "A" school and takes his leave. So unless he has others here going to the enterprise he probably won't run into too many people. Good news is, if you go to visit him some day, you can visit him on the ship! He just has to sign you in as a visitor.
Please sign me up for your GM group. My son, Josh, will start GM school on 4/4/10. Thank you, TJ.
Hello TJ. I have forwarded your request to Vee. She is in charge of the group roster. Please read all of the posts in this discussion. If you have any questions please ask. We will try our best to answer them or help you find someone who can. Gary T.
