Hi sjr23!

I don't really have much more information from what Janis gave you. We find out information late but it sounds like if you can find your son's ship's web page they keep alot of information on what the ship is doing. When I met my brothers ship many years ago, I received a letter stating that they were headed home and then just watched the news as to when the ship was expected. Now we have the internet so everything is so much easier!  As for how much time they have it all depends on the watch they pull. The short cruise that the Big E was on last, my son had "pull in duty" so he was busy that whole day. But I'm sure they give all of them some time after they hit port to meet with their families...can't imagine what that they wouldn't let them off after a long deployment!!! What ship is he on? He might be part of the group that went out with the Enterprise!?! Then their homecoming would be the same as ours!

 Dear sjr23,

Is this for a long deployment or just for a 2 week short deployment?   My son had a lot of time off after his short 2 week deployment in early December.  He left for the long deployment this month and will be gone for many months.  We are planning on going back to Virginia for the homecoming but won't know the actual dates until it gets much closer to the return.  Makes it difficult to make arrangements.  I'm planning on getting tickets on Southwest as they are advertising that they don't charge extra to make changes.  We got charged $300 on United when we had to change plans last summer when the weekend we had planned to go back turned out to be a duty weekend.  Our Enterprise site is very active and might have some information that might be helpful even if your son is on a different ship.  Kim might have some more information too.

jan1 and kim - (or anyone else) - maybe you all can help me with this - our son is currently deployed/underway/on a cruise/at sea - I really don't know the proper terminology and there are zero moms that I've found over on his ship.  Anyhow, he has invited us to come and see his ship come back in when it arrives back in VA.  What can you all tell me about that?  Is it the same everywhere?  Do they have to report back immediately to base for some sort of debriefing or do they have a few hours of liberty?  do you all know anything about this?  (if you don't, that's fine, too)  he will be at sea and he's been gone about 2 weeks now and we've had a chance to speak to him briefly once already due to a ship maintenance issue...otherwise, it would have been at least another week or 10 days before we'd have spoken.  Any help would be appreciated!

Olga, hats off to your son being on a sub! I don't think I could do that! Good luck to him earning his dolphins!

Janis' son and mine have been on the same path since BC where they were in the same division! Isn't that something! Now they are working together on the Big E. It sure is nice to see friendships form and the bond that the guys get from being in the Navy and working toward the same goal. And I have a nice new friend in Janis as we can commiserate if we haven't heard from one of ours sons!

I pulled up the news link on my phone at work with the ship leaving and had more than a few with tears in their eyes as they watched with me ... it was surreal. He has been in contact via email already so that is nice!

Dear Olga,

Kim's son and my son are on the same ship, same specialty, and same shift -nights.  We have a very active Moms group so that helps.  It reminds me a lot of bootcamp - just when we got used to hearing from him almost daily, now there is nothing.  My husband got an e-mail from him at work.  Before he was just a few hours away - now we won't see him for months and months.  My husband was back east last week for a business trip so he got to spend the weekend with our son.  We didn't make it for the deployment - just as well as only spouses and dependents were allowed on base.  The moms watched the ship depart from a coffee shop by the Chesapeake Bridge.  We are planning on being their for homecoming.  Good luck to your son on earning his dolphins!

Congrats on the deployed sailors. Yes the news coverage is wonderful.. I myself try to avoid the news. Sometimes they leave out nfo or get things all wrong. ie the Cleveland NASA location had a shooting so the News reported when actually it was a drill that took place in Florida!  I allow room for error but that is way to off for me. Another local news report stated the fire dept assisted with the fire and if you read it one way it sounded like they helped get to get it started not stopped. It read like: the fire broke out about 6:25pm and was assisted by the fire dept. LOL.

IA= Intermedaite Activity. It is new training for him. As for scarey. I have lbeen married to a fireman/swat/hazmat/EMT/PAramedic for over 23 years . Each time he goes to work I know the risk that is there. I trust God will not give me what I can't handle. This is an assignment that my sailor has picked for himself. He feels it is something he should be doing. Which yup it does worry me but I have friends who will be here for me. Including you N4M friends. Thanks Friends!

Some of us just saw our sailors deploy Thursday on the USS Enterprise. It was very exciting and very emotional! Thank goodness for live TV coverage!
LMC_ what is an IA? How scary is that to know your sailor is going to Afghanistan? But what an honorable thing to do as that is what they trained for, right?

Hello all! I do agree it's been a while since we all touched base. This time last year we were mostly looking to our loved ones leaving for Boot Camp and now it is alomst a year later. that means they will have 1 year of the commitment completed real soon. God Bless them All!

This past week I learned from my sailor that he is volunteering to go to Afghanistan as an IA. for a year.

How are everyone else's doing?
