Ascoobus, No I did not get a power of attorney....we ran out of time.  But he is trying to find out if he can get me one while he is in GL.  If not, then I'll just wait to get the application.

I was told by our airports USO office that when he is flying if you can't get through to the gate then call them and the USO office and someone will come escort your through security.  Didn't have to do it but another option if you have a problem.

Ladies, I have heard that if you get the answer No for going to the gate with your sailor, just keep going down the line to other customer service people and you will eventually get someone who says Yes!.  They were great when my son left for A school, on Standown, and my husband and I were able to go to the gate with him. My son was also bumped up to first class on a couple of his flights too.  :)

When our son left Phoenix after Standown, the person at the desk asked if we would like to go to the gate with him - all we had to show was our drivers license ID.  Two diffeent airlines bumped him up to first class - of course he was wearing his uniform.

Yea you need the form filled out because it has to be signed by them. I don't know if it's the same if you have a power of attorney for for him though. Did you get one before he left? If you have a power of attorney it might be a different story.

I agree with Karen!  Residence Inn was great!  We had no complaints!

NCRMoore:  You need regular ID (doesn't have to be military) to show to airlines personnel to get a gate pass to visit with your sailor. Sailor needs to be with you. All in your group need this ID.

We are already in DEERS, I already called them.  I'm just waiting for my ID application.  If I am already in DEERS do I need to still wait for the application with his signature? Or can I just go and get it now?  I really need to put my daughter on Tricare Prime before the 20th, and was told that I need my ID to do it.

SubWife2011- I received my form 2 weeks ago tomorrow. I went and got my ID last Tuesday. It came with an enrollment form for dental as well. When you do get your form, if you don't have a power of attorney(which I don't) call DEERS and make sure that you are enrolled because if you aren't they won't give you an ID. If you do have a power of attorney I think you can enroll yourself in DEERS if your husband hasn't already. He should have enrolled you in it already though.

Recruit Training Command has changed the departure procedures for Sailors being sent to A School. For recruits going to A School in Great Lakes; they will check in immediately following graduation where they will follow the schools policy on liberty. Sailors not staying at Great Lakes will fly out on Saturday depending on flight availability. For those few that do not fly out on Saturday, they will fly out on Sunday. the flights happen at all hours, you can spend time with them at the airport while waiting for the flights, the may get there several hours prior to their flight.

For those flying out

This was put together by gigi65 (thanks!). These are the items you will want to mail to your recruit NOW so they can hand you the answers on PIR day. They will not know the exact answers until 1-3 days prior to graduation!

Dear (son/daughter),

Once you have your plane ticket, complete the answers below and then take it with you to PIR and hand it to us after the ceremony (don't mail it):

Airport_______________________________

Airline________________________________

Flight #___________________________

Flight time_________________________

First destination (if more than one flight) _____________________________________

Time the bus leaves RTC_______________

Are you on a special "chartered flight"? ____

Hope this info helps.
