Thanks Cheryl - that does help.  I just got off the phone with my son.  He is supposed to start classes 5/4/11 but he said indoc could take a few weeks.  He said his roomate left him a note to watch TV and relax which was nice.  He is going to a friends house tomorrow for a cookout.  What a nice change for him - and for me as I can actually talk to him more. I will have to pass on the information about the bugs - I don't think he bought bug spray today!  He was jsut so glad to get out of Great Lakes and get to warmer weather!

Hi Linda!  My son is at GC and is waiting to class up Monday.  He has been there since 4/9 and is also an EM.  His life there is very different than BC.  His first day walking to the NEX he saw deer and turtles.  He couldn't believe it.  During his period of indoctrination he has had a job to do and still has PT 3 times a week.  He has had liberty every weekend.  He has spent his weekends shopping at the NEX and the mall.  He purchased a tv and he has an Xbox and laptop which also provides entertainment.  He also likes the food.  I get to talk to him every day via calls and texts which is wonderful.  The only complaint he has had are the bugs, so bug spray is a must.  He has been bitten quite a lot.  I have certainly been able to relax now that he is there. Of course Monday the fun starts.  Lots of studying!   We are going to be visiting him this coming weekend so we will see first hand.  Hope this helps a little.  Any questions, just ask.  All these people are awesome!

Can anyone tell me what the A-school graduation is like?  Is it worth an 8 hour round trip drive?  My son graduates on 5/20 and wants to come home right after the graduation ceremony.  If it is a really big deal and not just a simple affair we would most definitely go.  He just bought a car and will drive home after for his 10 day leave.  We just sold our house and I will be very busy packing around that time.  Thanks for any info!!

Welcome Linda! Congratulations to your son!

Our son, Diego, (Kyle) will graduate "A" school on 03 June and then class up in August to Power School. Diego is also an "EM" and doing well. It is a tough program, but always encourage your son. He will have long hours, but he can do it. Keep in touch with him, you will be able to much more than BC. Diego was married in December, so he and Kelsey have on base housing. There are many others that will be able to help you with the life of a single person on base. Feel free to ask many questions, there is always one that will answer!! Again, welcome!

Hi Linda,  Ask everyone here any questions you may have and read the discussions above.  We are all either Moms, Dads, girlfriends or wives.  Our sailors are in various stages of Nuke school or deployment.  This is a great group. Welcome!

Hi, My son left Great Lakes at 6am for Charleston for A school.  He is an EM.  Any words of wisdom would be appreciated!  This is all a new journey for me!

JC's mom...they really don't need much since they are furnished and their is a refrigerator.  They don't make meals in their rooms.  They eat in the cafeteria or whatever the Navy calls it.  They do need personal items such as shampoo etc.  They can have cell phone, tv, computer games and laptop.  It's pretty similar to a college dorm.  They do skip meals a lot because of classes and mandatory study so snack food, beef jerky etc. is good to have on hand.  They also have Subway and such right on base.  They can have a car so they have the ability to get what they need.

JC's Mom--the picture above is the housing quarters for A School.  Yes, it's like a dorm.  2 guys on each side of a shared bathroom.  You hope all are clean on the bathroom when it gets inspected, for sure

Hi everyone.  Does anyone have a sailor graduating prototype on Friday April 29, 2011 in Goose Creek.  Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

What are the living arrangements like for the sailors in A school? Is it barracks or more like an apartment space? What items will they need - furniture, utenils, ect? My sailor goes to BC in Dec of this year and will then be off to A school for the Nuke Program. I would like to get a good idea of items he will need.
Thanks.
