OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

sunnyb and other new moms the above link goes to a different Group and has loads of information regarding Nuke A school. Very informative. I like asking questions on this group... it's almost easier with all the "veteran Moms"! Thanks Ladies (and Gentlemen too) ;o)

Comment by Andi6109 on May 26, 2011 at 5:59pm: Kat my boyfriend was initially supposed to graduate on 6/17 and he said that he wouldnt get his A school grad leave until 7/15, a month later basically! But then i guess a lot of people got dropped from the program so his class got rolled back and is not graduating 6/24 and gets his 10day leave right after and doesnt have to wait.

sunnyb - basically as everyone has said you won't know anything until he gets there. My sailor got there right before the xmas stand down so didnt start classes till jan and was able to come home. he also got liberty in feb since they had presidents day off so 3 day weekend. his home is just under the 400mile radius. so they get chances to leave, and as mary said it all depends on what phase he is in during that time too. good luck!

Comment by hapsmolmr on May 26, 2011 at 5:45pm: thanks for all the info on seating. My best friend is coming too - she's like his Godmother and is a photo buff so we will try to get there early and get a good seat for photos but on the aisle so we can get to him ASAP when liberty is called.

Comment by Connie foaling-lady (Groton) on May 26, 2011 at 4:49pm: All those going to PIR on Friday .. there is a great photo op in the mini-museum that you walk thru to get to the hall ... be sure to take a pic of your sailor in front of the giant ship mural!! Also, tell everyone in your group to make a pit stop before you get seated ... you'll be waiting a longgggg time before the ceremony begins and if you've had coffee, 'nuff said!!

Comment by Kat (MM Nuke) on May 26, 2011 at 3:59pm: Sunnyb - is your son an MM, ET or EM? if he is an MM the A school is 14 weeks long, so he will get leave after he graduates most likely, BUT you can't always count on that. My son said the class that graduated the week before him got denied their leave right away. If he is an EM or ET then his A school is 6 months long and he should get leave after graduation.

My son did say that they have a 4 day weekend over the 4th of July, so you might be able to go visit him then.

He should also have the first weekend, or maybe two, free when he first gets to Charleston, but seeing as he has PIR on the 18th, and depending what rate he is, he might have to wait two to three weeks to get school started, which could actually push him back to just after the 4th of July holiday weekend. He won't know until he gets there when his A school actually starts, then he should also get a graduation date for A school. I hope this helps a little.

Comment by maryquitecontrary (1131 M) on May 26, 2011 at 3:36pm: Well Sunnyb, it depends how close you live to the base....... A school is 6 months long, and generally there is a leave after that. Since your son will be starting in June or July, it's possible that his first break might be at Christmas time when the schools close for the holiday.

In A school there are phases that they go through. See above discussions - there is one about what your sailor can expect upon arrival to Goose Creek that goes into detail on the phases. However, at some point, he will be able to travel 400 miles from the base on weekends and that might present an opportunity for a visit before Christmas time!

Just wondering if you knew when their breaks are... mom is wondering when her son gets a break to come home. ~just wanna have it in my head so I'm not hoping for things that aren't coming too soon~

Comment by William in Nashua on May 26, 2011 at 2:06pm: We skipped my son's PIR he wanted me to visit him during A school instead and deliver his car, which we did last weekend. I am working on getting him set up with USAA auto insurance so he has his own policy, I talked to them and send him a Power Of Attorney form for him to sign. I opened my own account which I can use for everything but buy my own car insurance at the discounted rates. If he completes the POA and faxes it to them, then I can set it up for him by phone.

USAA does have am auto insurance plan where they will let the sailor have his own policy on a car that is owned by the parents and this is better for them in the long run to have continuous coverage under their own name. It will be a lot cheaper too then I can remove him as a driver on my policy.
