Tnnavymom - usually sailors fly to their A School the Saturday after PIR ( generally in the morning). Usually families are allowed to wait with them at the gate in the airport. My husband is an HT, and stayed in great lakes for his schooling. This was great for usm because it meant he got to stay with us the whole weekend. He had to check into school immediately after graduation, which took 4 hours, but he didn't have to report to school till Monday. He did have to be back on base by a certain time every night, so no overnight stays.

I am so sorry to tell you, but the friend's statement is accurate.  The Navy  won't  pay for it.

My son is a CPO now and I asked him for clear answer for you. he also was a recruiter two years ago. An honest one anyway. Here is his answer:

ATF= Advanced Training Field. The recruiter lied to him and probably
told him hes was getting a 5 to 6 year contract with a bonus and/or
automatic advancement to e-4. its just a guaranteed c school contract
that has gone away for the most part. They had it around when I joined
and if I knew I would have done that.

tnnavymom - Hi, Welcome!  As you can see from my post earlier on this page, my son is HT-ATF also.  He had to add 24 months to his enlistment to get the ATF rate, when he signed up in 2010.  He still waited almost a year in DEP before he left for boot camp in August 2011. After A school, they are HT-FA, and the ATF(advanced technical field) is taught in C school, where they learn more specialized welding techniques.

HIs A school was in GL (different base than bootcamp, but still in GL), from October 21,2011 until the end of Feb. 2012.   He was sent to an LHD-4, the USS Boxer,  in March.  He was told  - No C school until after his first deployment, which should be next summer ( his ship is still undergoing renovations).  I gather that C school is at the schedule and the need of the Navy, not my sons'!

He had looked at other rates, but the wait times in DEP were much longer than HT, so he went with that.  He really likes it, too, which is great.  HT's are also trained as firefighters and belong to the maintainence crew, I believe.

I think that he can go in as HT and ask to be moved into HT-ATF at a later date, probably after boot camp.

I hope this helps!  oh - make sure you join the DEP group , BootcampMoms and then you can join a group which will be specific for your sons ship/division at bootcamp.

The other day, I was speaking to my brother, who is in the construction industry, regarding jobs, etc.  He said that welders are in great demand.  Someone had told him that in the Chicago area, a certified welder can get a job in 20 minutes!

Thanks, Sheila. I do want to learn more about HTs and meet more HT moms.

Leoyak, glad to find you again.

My son graduated from bootcamp on 10/21/11 and A school was at GL.  He is now on the USS Boxer, in San DIego.  He is HT-FA also, and at some point will be heading for C school, because he is ATF.  Loves  San DIego and is very happy being a Hull Tech!  We got to go out and visit him this summer and see the shop, etc..  Welcome, Sparkjo!
