INTRODUCTION: A place for parents and others who have attended PIR and graduation weekend to share comments, suggestions and ideas that will hopefully make it easier and more enjoyable for other familes who are preparing for their own PIR events.

WHAT TO DO: This is an 'interactive' forum, with each person encouraged to start new topics (by posting your comments in the 'blank' at the top of each page) -and- respond to individual posts (by clicking 'reply' on that particular post).

ALSO: Over time, I will be organizing some of the posts herein as a sort of 'guide' which will be static -- that is, there will be no new posts to that discussion... thus it will not actually be a 'discussion' but more of a factual and flowing narrative that takes the reader, moment by moment, through happy hours of PIR, covering the basics with good recommendations about what to do, what not to do, and how to do (or avoid) doing it.

To get started on this process, it would be very useful to hear from you regarding which posts and/or particular information do you think should be included? Sincerely, I look forward to hearing from you and transcribing our collective wisdom for those who will attend PIR soon.

My daughter is 12.  Does she count as an attendee for PIR?  I hope not because then both of my children can attend to watch their big brother graduate.

Yes, she must be on the Access List to attend PIR. Everyone ages 3 and up must be on the Access List to attend. See The Form Letter that you received from your SR, http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/upcoming_grads.asp and http://www.bootcamp.navy.mil/fam_guide.asp.

There are 4 guests for your SR's PIR. Those that he lists on the Access List will be the ones who will be permitted to enter the Drill Hall and attend. He would have listed the people he intends to list on the Access List on the lines on The Form Letter that he sent you.

Check your My Page.

what is a grad and go?

Grad and Go is an outdated term. By the old standards almost all new Sailors are Grad and Go since they will leave the RTC for "A" School or training within 24 hours of PIR. See PIR Day and Liberty During PIR Weekend for how things work now.

Check your My Page.

Thank you!  That helps a lot, thought she might have a few days to come home between A school and graduation to get her car.

No, there is no leave until after "A" School and she would only be able to go home on Liberty to get her car if home is within the Liberty limits set forth by her "A" School and if her "A" School permits cars--some do and some don't; it depends on the length of "A" School and if there is room for the Sailors to have cars.

My son will be going to Goose Creek for Nuke School. Any idea of when he will leave and what kind of liberty he will have?

I left info on your My Page. Your Sailor will most likely fly out the day after PIR, You will have from about 10:30 am when Liberty is called until sometime that evening and then you will be able to meet him at the airport and spend time with him there until his flight.

Help.. my son wants my bro, USMC retired, to wear his uniform.. does it matter which one?  Dress blues?   Honestly, I don't even know the diff.  He wasn't planning on wearing one, but I think my son wants him to .. and he mentioned it on his I am a sailor call :)

Marsha, I respectfully disagree with your comment. PIR is always held in the USS Midway Ceremonial Drill Hall with the exception of the Centennial Celebration on 07/01/2011. Guests who choose to wear a military uniform must wear the appropriate Uniform of the Day.

LPNavyMom, See my comment on the Uniform of the Day and also see PIR Day and Liberty during PIR Weekend to help you know how to plan your weekend.
