Having a hard day. He's been gone for 11 days now and no letter saying how to write to him. I don't want him to think I'm not writing or sending him letters or even thinking about him because I am!  Very sad. Also, read on the "letter writing" section that some people were glad they did not encounter their birthday during bootcamp. My son's birthday is in two weeks and this kind of concerned me. Any experiences anyone can share regarding this?

Reasons to wait on the form letter:

1. The PAO at the RTC asks that loved ones wait on the form letter before mailing letters.

2. The recruiter does not always give the right address and letters that do not have the correct address may be returned or may be delayed several weeks in getting to your recruit since it will not be a high priority for those in the mail room to look up the correct information.

3. Even if you do have the correct information, your recruit will not receive letters that are mailed before receiving the form letter much quicker, if at all, than letters mailed after receiving the form letter because recruits do not receive mail until they are in their permanent ship and a Recruit Mail Petty Officer is trained. The first Mail Call is on day 1-3 or 1-4 DOT.

***If it has been at least 2 calendar weeks since your SR arrived at the RTC and you don't have the form letter, then yes, it fine to get the address from the recruiter and send letters. Double-check the info against that at http://bootcamp.navy.mil/contact_recruit.asp or Ship/Division--How it Works.

Zest mom that is funny they use the term "cranking" in the Navy. The new sailors have to crank in the galley! Keep up the good work getting those letters out. There is no such thing as too many!!

I appreciate your awareness! Thanks!!

Hi,

Finally got his letter!!! Yay! Although it is just a form letter it was a small piece of him. Imagine my surprise that they have already taught him incredible penmanship. LOL.  He is on ship 4 division 188. Any others out there with kids in this ship/division?? PIR date 5/30 the tickets were purchased immediately. Now where to stay?  Anyone have suggestions from past experience?

Such an uplifting day. Still waiting anxiously for a real letter or phone call to hear his voice but for now this will help get me thru a few more days.

I have a lot in common with you;  My daughter just left Tuesday.  Its been only 5 days and I cry everyday about something.  I see her everywhere;  Her birthday is during bootcamp as well.  I have been writing her a letter everyday and writing day 1,2,3 etc on them.  That way she will get them all at once!  They know that we cant write them without their address so hang in there for that first letter!  It is comforting to know that someone knows just how this feels.  It seems harder for moms;  we have that special bond with them which makes it harder to let go.  But what they are doing is going to make them stronger and in the end, we and they will be glad they did this.  hang in there!  I'm right there with you!

Hi,

I got a phone call from my son yesterday. The excitement inside to see IL come up on my phone was overwhelming.  His voice was so sad and not what I was prepared for.  I was strong for him and told him everything would be fine. Told him he was strong and he could do this. He said he had made a few friends. I asked him if he was home sick and he managed to get out a yah. So hard to hear him sad.  I keep telling myself it's just hearing my voice that hit him so hard and that he is fine. I tried so hard to make him laugh and lift his spirits. Said he had gotten all my letters they were required to open them in front of someone to prove there was no unacceptable pictures or anything inside. I kept telling him the first few weeks are the hardest and it will get better he will start to get into more of a routine and all. I was so struggling to lift his spirits I forgot to ask if he was going to be able to call again?

So here I sit struggling with how to help him and how to know if his sadness was just homesickness or what. He is usually so happy go lucky and I'm not use to hearing him so down it's gut wrenching.  Any other mom's/dad's out there encounterd the same? Any words of encouragement will help!

He may or may not know when the next call is scheduled. See Phone Cards and Phone Calls. Just keep sending letters of encouragement and encourage others to write as well. See Letter Writing & Fun Stuff/Questionnaires to send to your Recruit.

I heard from my son on Saturday as well. He seemed quiet, but he said everything was okay.I will be praying for you and your son. Keep your chin up.
