OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

Paternity leave most certainly can be denied. It is at the discretion of his chain of command, they can say no. The Navy can say when, and if the dates do not suit his school or duty station, there will be no paternity leave. That is why is is optional, they don't have to give it to him.

His A School will be in Groton, CT and I'm in Florida. When I was reading about paternity leave it said that if cannot be denied, so why would the answer most likely be no? And what do you mean the 10 days are optional? I read that the sailor can split the days up, but it never mentioned the Navy had a day so in whether or not the 10 days were consecutive. :-(

A school is indeed active duty. Paternity leave can be used up to a year after the birth, and is up to the command to grant it. It is not for the birth, rather, afterward, for bonding. A deployed sailor would have to wait until the deployment is over... so depending on which school the father is in, how he is doing in school, and several other factors, he might or might not be allowed to come home during training.
Best course of action for expecting fathers at A school is to let the school know your due date when they check in. Do not spring it on the chain of command, work with them. They can route a chit for leave when the time approaches. If they don't ask, the answer is always "no". If they do ask, there may be a "yes" (although a no is likely). Can't hurt to ask. Some commands allow them to submit the leave chit with the dates blank, to be filled in when you go into labor, others commands do not.
The ten days are optional, and not his option, the Navy's option. That said, he probably can get the days in addition to his regular leave after school if they do not let him go during. Usually, they want to help out, so unless he's in a program which is full and hard to stop and start in the middle, paternity leave is no problem.
Also helps a lot if you live nearby, not across the country.

That is a good question. ..I would think it'd apply to A school as well but I'm not sure. My husband was on hold when he first got there because all the classes were full and he thought he would have to wait a long time but he'll definitely be done and somewhere else when I have the baby which I've been so worried he'll miss the birth

I would love to know the answer to this as well. I am due May 21 but as soon as my husband graduates on May 9th, im kicking this kid out. We already have 2 other kids (1 girl 4 years old and 1 son 17 months), it is not fun taking care of them while working full time and 36 weeks preggo when it hurts to move. I miss playing with my kids and ready to be able to get out of bed without struggling. Sorry for the little vent, just done being pregnant.

Does this apply to A School? Technically that's active duty, right?
