~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

Cheryl:  In the past, some SRs have shared tons of info with families, I'm sure assuming that it stayed with family members.  Excited moms, etc shared lots of it on this site or on the FB site....RDCs saw it...and there was some "hazing" that went on for those SRs (for lack of a better term).  Not all RDCs will be on these sites....but some will be.  We have factual stories from SRs who were asked if "this is your mom" by RDCs---with N4Moms on their computer screens.

Now, the importance of remaining anonymous is only if too much info is being shared on this public site.  Otherwise, it doesn't matter at all.

One story I will tell you that could have had horrible results:  Back in the Fall of 2010, there was a wife in one of the PIR groups on this site.  Her hubby SR was not so fond of one of his RDCs and told her so, calling him a very "choice" name.  She decided to post that here, on this site, verbatim.  If that wasn't bad enough, another wife chimed in that when this 1st wife was at PIR, she should go up to that RDC and "kick him in the ___".   YIKES!   Needless to say, we made sure to get those posts deleted right away.  That could have been devastating to that SR, and shame on the wife for thinking it was ok to share something like that on a public forum.

Before posting what your SR told you in a call or letter, just ask yourself if he/she would want you putting that on a public page that the RDCs could be reading.  If the answer is he/she wouldn't care, then fine.  When in doubt, it is best to not post it or to just private message it to one of your friends on here.

There would be no"harm" to a family member or recruit, persay.  Just some harrassing of your SR could result, and believe me, your SRs do NOT want any extra attention drawn to them.

Thank you Diannep I will be more cautious. I am wondering tho. I keep hearing the warnings to try to maintain anonymity but I am not sure I understand why it's so important that their RDC doesn't know who their moms are. I know I am new to all of this and this probably sounds stupid to those seasoned. I do understand of course why you need to keep everything positive. Do they punish them just for being able to make the connection or is it more of a concern that someone try to use that information to harm either the families or the recruit.

DebbieS, SO glad you got your letter yesterday! I hope I get one soon :)

When I first started looking at this site, and found all the slide presentations, I was really excited when I saw one of the ships was the USS Kearsarge. My Dad was on the (real ship) USS Kearsarge at one time, and one of my siblings has his yearbook from then!! At first, I was hoping my son got assigned to that division. Of course, now I'm very proud he is in Div 929.... I would have been proud whichever div he was put in, haha! He comes from a line of sailors, besides his Dad. My Dad and one of my uncles were on the USS West Virginia when she went down at Pearl Harbor. Thankfully, both of them survived or I, most of my siblings, and my cousins would not be here today! :-)

I think that I'm going to stay on both this site and the 2 FB pages that I'm on.  I'll just try to check myself before posting any info there. I like looking at the pictures that the 900 Div FB page posts.    Like you said, they can go back and see me and then my pics of my daughter and posts that we have made. None of us have posted anything negative.  (I'm really good at pressing the "like" button)  hahaha

I have posted on FB that I received my first phone call and my first letter yesterday (yay!)  I could just hear her excitement as I read the letter.  Cannot wait to get the next call  :)

LOL! I was afraid my post might sound off-putting! I didn't mean it to be! I didn't mean you DebbieS!! I was really only talking about one person that seemed more like a "phisher" than a real, caring Mom, and I could even be wrong about that one. But I realize that on FB, I don't have the same anonymity as I do here, and now I am worried that I might call undue attention to my SR IF someone (like an RDC) is watching those pages. I don't say anything offensive or even post anything that he says because he really hasn't said much in  2.15 minutes of conversation, haha! But someone could easily figure out who my SR is.....So now what do I do?? Can  I stay on the sites and just not say anything, only read? Or ok to just not mention my SR and keep all conversation generic? Or un-friend the FB sites all together?

Good morning everyone!

Thanks for the reminders diannep!! I am here AND on the FB pages and of course, now I am freaked out that those who have asked to be "friends" here and on FB, might not REALLY be Moms like me, lol!! All I can do now is hope they are! There really has only been one here that once I made a friend only sent me a website on ribbons and NO, I am not talking about lalaRibbonQueen. I should have private messaged one of you veterans first before I accepted the friend invite. Maybe they still really ARE a legitimate Mom but I haven't heard anything else from them...I will be more careful. Thanks again!

Speaking of Ribbons, I haven't heard from LalaRibbonQueen about wanting information for ribbons.....maybe my request got lost in the posts? I went to her page but can't figure out how to order. Any help here? Thanks!

diannep,

Great perspective from experience!!  Also, on the FB groups, rumors have been known to be started which just panics everyone~~

thank you diannep for the reminder. I don't know how anyone could leave this site though. Navyformoms is a complete "peace" of mind. I have not been approved yet for that fb page. I will find out what it is about and report back, but you are stuck with me here. lol Good morning too!
