How all of our military mothers had a great mother's day!

Welcome dfox, what everyone is saying is true the time distance is a little tough, but then you get up on a sunday morning and you have messages waiting for you from your sailor!  Really made my day today and we got to chat a little while before he went to bed. The facebook message board is great when you catch them on line, for me the back and forth is almost as good as a call, and if you have a sailor who will do it you can video chat and it is FREE. Now my boy is allergic to any camera (gets it from his dad), but for you out there who's son isn't afflicted by this that is a wonderful option. I am kidding he will hook up his camera when I beg and it is a holiday, but even without it a wonderful way to stay current with your sailor without costing an arm and a leg

Thanks everyone for the advice on a co-signer. We will probably try that.
Welcome dfox. It is tough, the distance. My son just arrived April 12th. His wife is still here with us. We are waiting for her to get clearance. I also have an Army son in San Korea. It can be really tough sometimes but they are actually closer to each other than we are. They are at least in the same time zone. Only an hour difference.
The ladies here are great and so helpful. They have been a lifeline for me.
A couple of things you need to know. There is no public transportation at all. You either walk, bike or buy a car. There is NO chow hall. I personally have never experienced this. My husband is a formal Marine and again I have the Army and Navy sons. This is the first base I have ever heard of without a chow hall. Right now my son is living off of fast food. He doesn't have a vehicle yet and carrying groceries several miles is difficult. They don't even provide them transportation to their posts. My son is an MA. One of the posts is 8 miles away. Those are just a few things to think about.

Hi dfox! Welcome! We all have sailors attached to different ships, subs or land duty in Guam. The distance does stink, I'm not gonna lie, but with today's technology it is very doable :). My sailor is attached to the USS Frank Cable and is IT2.

Bubweena, same thing happened to my son with a car loan. They wanted to charge him 13% so when he was home in Dec we went to Navy fed and he got a loan for 1.7% with me co signing. It is a 5 year loan because it's a brand new 2014. He wanted to make payments while he was still in the Navy and had no other bills. I'm sorry your son is stressed....it's so hard to hear. Prayers for peace for him.

I'm so glad you got to spend the day with your dad. My mom had dementia too. It's heartbreaking but when you see those windows of opportunity and grab them it's priceless.

Take care. Did you ever get on the Guam FB page?

Bubweena  That same thing happened to our son when he tried to get a loan, so we co-signed for him and he got the going interest rate. He payed his car off in less then 2 years. Also I don' know how it works but some of the guys will loan out there cars when they are deployed so the car doesn't just sit for weeks at a time.

CEEJ thanks for the info.  We had already decided on the zip lock shrink bags for all their clothing, towels, sheets, comforters.  I am trying to figure out a way to get their dishes, pots and pan, glasses, toaster things like that.  The less they have to buy over there the better.  He is trying to buy a truck.  There is so much demand and little inventory.  He went to see about getting a loan and because he is only 19 with no credit history they are charging him 16% and making it a 5 year loan.  That is crazy.  She will be coming over as soon as she gets her medical stuff taken care of, her credit checked and she receives her passport.  He was told she has to be there to get Command Sponsored.  So they will have to live off base at first which really means he has to have a car.  She also has asthma and he is afraid they won't sponsor her because of that.  Everyday it is something new.  He is so lonely and stressed right now.

Now I miss the days when his biggest worry was that he wasn't' t going to get to play in the game on Friday night.

He is too young for this, I tried to tell both of them but you know we're old, we don't remember what it's like to be in love.

My dad had a saying when we were young "Love is just a warm feeling in the groin area" LOL Crude but at that age there is a lot of truth to that.   But they are going to grow up real quick..

Okay enough complaining for the day.  I got to spend the day with my daddy today.  It was a beautiful day.  He was even able to walk around the block.  He has advanced dementia and he knew who I was, even though he couldn't' t call me by name but he knew I was his little girl.  I am grateful for that blessing

Goodnight all, have a Blessed weekend.

Bubweena,

I spoke to my DIL about the availability of linens on the loaner program and unfortunately, she was not sure what is available because they took their own.  Her advice is to have your DIL pack as much of that stuff as she can and bring it with her. My DIL flew United and they were extremely kind when they found out she was a military spouse and they allowed her to take 3 very large bags with her and didn't charge her a nickle for any of them.  We also put all of her linens in Space Bags to get everything to fit.

Her only other advice is if they are going to buy linens in Guam, she should go to Ross instead of the Nex.  The price is about the same but the quality at Ross was better.

Hope everything is moving along smoothly for your DIL to join your son.

I found the FB page and was added yesterday! I know of 2 other Guam moms that I have invited to that page.

My son's GF is moving to Guam in January. She has 2 dogs but due to the cost ,she will only take one....they do need to be current on vaccines and they are quarantined once they arrive in Guam. she needs to re home her other dog but I can't take her. The GF is going to ask her mom if she will take the dog.

My sailor's furniture is being packed/ shipped on the Navy dime. Hopefully it will be there when he arrives!

Bubweena,

It does get better, I promise.  Somewhere along the line it becomes your new normal.  Regarding shipping the household goods, the Navy movers came to our house at the end of January and their stuff arrived the last week of March.  My son is currently at sea so his new bride got the pleasure of setting up their entire household by herself but I know he will be extremely happy when he arrives home and finds all of his stuff.

The furniture and other household goods are loaned to them at no charge until their own household goods arrive.  Its very basic a couch, a couple of chairs, a dinette set, basic cookware, a couple of place settings, bed and bed frame.  I'm not sure about towels.  When my daughter-in-law left to join my son one entire bag was packed with towels and bedding.

The only thing they do not get loaned to them was a television.  My son said it was so hard for them not to go out and buy one but they knew they had two coming with their stuff so they watched a lot of Netflicks on their laptop.

Let me know once your daughter-in-law arrives in Guam and we can connect the girls together.  The boys make friends easily because they are working but it seems to be much harder on the girls to find each other.

I'm not positive about the situation with the cat but I think it has to be quarantined in Guam for a period of time.  My kids didnt take any pets but they adopted a shelter puppy within a couple of weeks of arriving.  My daughter-in-law has met more wives at the dog park than any other place!

Let me know if you have any other questions, I'll try to help. Let me send a message to my DIL and I'll find out about the towels and bedding issue.
