Congratulations to all the Mom's whose Sailors graduated their A school Thursday!! God's blessing for a safe trip home! Enjoy your boys and all those hugs you're going to get :-D
ladyrocker: My sons PIR was 6/20. I cant believe that it has been a month already. He was in division 932. My sailor is going to be a weapon machinist mate. He tells me what they used to call turpeodo man. Would love to have a navy sista.
Elilam we were hoping the same thing, we did end up flying from the same airport, but not to the same city, although there were sailors on our flight.
You can go to the airport and wait with your sailor, if you are there the same time they arrive - but that may be 1am! We chose not to do that since we live only 90 min from Groton and would see him frequently.
Another family found out at PIR their sailor who was supposed to fly to Groton was put on medical hold, and they ended up spending the weekend in Chicago with their sailor. He eventually made it to Groton.
In the end, you cannot really plan! Don't know if that helps at all!
Footnut, you are not far from us in Newtown!
Welcome Footnut & Eliliam
Regarding flights from Chicago, both O'hare & Midway are used, and they fly into Hartford, Boston and Providence. There is no way to know what your sailor has until they get their ticket.
PIR is amazing. After the cermony with took our sailor out for lunch and then back to the Navy Lodge to have some quiet family time. He took a long long shower and changed into some clothes that I brought with me to wear in the hotel room. Bring some regular underwear to give to him to take on to Groton they are ready to get out of the tighty whities. We ordered pizza and just caught up with each other. Back to the base at 7pm. Met up the next morning at Ohare at 1:00 am. His flight left at 7:15am. We had breakfast together and some more precious time to spend together. They require you to show ID if you want to go to the gate and sit with your sailor. My son has been at Groton for a month and is loving it. Is very happy with his decision to serve. Proud mom!!
Welcome Footnut - wonderful to hear! be prepared, there is more to come because our young men continue to make us proud, it is overwhelming. Enjoy!
Hello elilam46 - after our son's PIR we took him out to lunch, to a local park for some pictures, back to the Navy Gateway Inn & Suites to relax for a few hours then he went back to BOOT CAMP barracks. At 4 a.m. (their flight was at 1 p.m.) the next day we met his bus @ O'Hare -we gave him his cell phone at lunch so he could tell us where he was. What a sight to see all of these young men packed and ready to fly off! Our son checked in with his group first, then checked us in - we all needed I.D.'s - so we could go through the line w/ him and wait w/him by departure gate. We had a huge wonderful time @ breakfast and shared a few more hours visiting. We were not given his flight info. until after PIR. Hope it works out well for you and yours! Hooyah! PIR.....take tons of kleenex....totally overwhelming! It's ALL good!
