Palacios, Texas here. My grandson was in ship 11 (USS Keersarge) in Div 204. He graduated BC on June 22, 2014 and is now in Sub school in Groton, CT. His Dad and I will be there to visit with him the week-end of Aug 22-24 when he graduates Sub school. He will then be in "A" school and after that, I guess "C" school. He is MMS. I have sent for and received a tourism booklet of all the sights to see and things to do around and in the Groton, CT area. It looks like a very pretty place. Can't wait!!!
The anticipation drives me crazy. This is the first time that my son is doing something on his own that I am not part of. Usually it was baseball, school, even doing the security packet for the Navy....I helped and was involved. I knew what needed to be done and what was going to happen next. I just miss him :(
The surprise calls are the best. Like when your kid has to visit the doctor for some reason, and they keep a phone there just for them to call home. The kindness of those people really helped me survive the uncertainty of BC.
Does anyone remember how often our sailors are allowed to call home during BC? My mother in law missed a call from a 331 area code...which is IL ...I am so sad!!! Will he get a chance to call again today? Or will he have to wait another week???
I appreciate everyone !! Thank you :)
When you get to see your Sailor after graduation, he should have the flight information by then and which terminal and flight he will be leaving from, probably at O'hare, or possibly Midway. Altho we were told one terminal (#3) at O'Hare and by the time we got into the airport, they had moved the whole group of Sailors over to terminal #2 so we just walked over to it and met him there. He called us on someone's cell phone. You will go to where the tickets are checked and the baggage is checked and loaded to find them.
Dee: We rented a car and also stayed near O'Hare, but didn't have any trouble driving on the toll roads. Just be sure to take plenty of rolled quarters, dimes, and nickels - they don't accept 50 cent pieces. Guess they are too large to go thru the chute. It took us about 35 minutes to drive from near O'Hare to be at the RTC for graduation and our group had to be there at 7:15 AM as our Sailor was receiving an Award at graduation. We spent about $15 on the toll roads for the whole week-end, and we went to Gurnee Mills Mall and all around it. (We also passed by the amusement park that I am assuming was maybe Six Flags). When we went to downtown Chicago, we went to the Rosemont (?) train station (its the next to last station before "OHare and rode the "L" Blue line train into the downtown loop and got off near the Willis Tower (the old Sears Tower). It is also really close by Millenium Park, and then you can catch a Taxi to Navy Pier. We had to rent a Limo to bring us from Navy Pier back to the Train Station and he only charged the four of us $25 for all of us. What a bargain. Cheaper than a Taxi. What an experience to ride the "L". I always wanted to do that.
