Storymom absolutely we also have spoken to the owners not just the property managers. We rented a house in Oregon once and the owner actually called my while flying his plane! I had a question and he got back to me personally. Anything you do or say over the internet is really in question you have to follow through and make sure everything is what they say it is. I personally would never even consider using something on Craig's List just too scary for me :-/  I do like the idea of checking out Airfarewatchdog that's an interesting tip that I hadn't heard of before.

Pam my husband and I (well most mostly me!) also contact chambers of commerce or visitor information bureaus they're always willing to send information in the mail. This is such a great site for learning from others...good and bad!

When we rented the house on Oahu years ago, after searching VRBO & Homeaway etc, we called the landlord & introduced ourselves & went over a few details. (We understand the 'hosting website' is important, but I always want "verbal confirmation" from the actual owner, even at hotels) It's a long way from home to have a "glitch" at the last minute.  ...That link Pam & Kevs posted looks interesting!

JBsMom - the very first thing I did was have the tourism department for Oahu send me books on the island.  The next thing I did was put out alerts on airfare.  Airfarewatchdog.com is a pretty good one that sends you an email when airfare goes on sale.  Once I had the airfare booked, then it was on as far as researching on the internet for a rental agency.  I would even go to the BBB and plug in a rental agencies name to make sure they were legit.  I have also used Homeaway and VRBO, but didn't want to take the chance of going that far for a rental not to be on the up and up.  In fact, my son found one on craigslist and when they said to send the deposit via wire, I backed out of that one really quick. Good luck!

JBsmom4 it can be a very long process of searching but if you don't mind that part it's worth it in the end. I haven't researched a house for Hawaii but a few mom's have posted where they stayed. Pam-Corpsman Mom just posted the one she used a few days ago on here (http://affordable-paradise.com/). My husband and I live in Ca. and have used VRBO, Homeaway and Trinidad Retreats the last one is specific to Ca. Just type any of those into your search engine and it will take you to their site, both have Hawaii listings and you can choose by island and narrow it down. I've been looking and it's pretty fun to look at all the options. Also you can just type Hawaii Vacation Rentals into your search engine and it will come back with lots of sites. It can be very overwhelming but exciting when you find the right one that fits your schedule and budget!

love Kailua and Kaneohe too! its where my son is stationed and it's ideal! ...we only went to Waikiki once, to walk the beach, (crowded) stand in front of 'Duke's' statue for a photo, and do a bit of shopping. we also strolled thru a couple of the rich hotels there to see the gardens and pools.

I am planning to visit my sailor in February. I am wondering how does one go about renting one of the houses? Kevsmom93, maybe you could point me in the right direction? Thanks!

Kevsmom93 - you're very welcome!  We rented a two bedroom and there were five of us including our Sailor.  Two nights he stayed at the barracks, but the rest of the time he stayed with us.  The only thing I wished we would have gotten was something within walking distance to the beach.  But we go to the beach all the time and when I was planning this vacation the beach didn't play into it very much.  We loved Kailua and did go in to Waikiki one day.  Wow - what a shock.  Honolulu is a major city and being there was just like any other major city.  Traffic, homeless, noisy, graffiti.  I get that five days a week working in Atlanta, so when we go on vacation we like quiet and laid back.  Kailua was perfect for that and yet close enough to Honolulu for the local Wal-mart!

Yes, plotting our second trip there before my son leaves at the end of 2015!!

The Hale Koa is very nice.  Your daughter will have to be with you to check in.  The grounds are very nice and you have beach access in addition to pools.  But it is in Honolulu in the city.  Parking is across the street. We just came back on June 14th.

Welcome Cynthia!

Storymom that picture doesn't even look real to me it's so beautiful!

Pam- Thank you for the link my husband and I love renting houses on our vacations. We've discovered it's actually less expensive and just all around more enjoyable than a hotel. Not going to Hawaii anytime soon but happy for those that are :-)
