My son's recruiter told me that he attended A school in Great Lakes and was granted "overnight" liberty on Friday and Saturday night and did not have to return until Sunday night check in.  Is this not the case anymore?  My son is staying in GL for A school and I understand he will leave RTC and check into A school on Friday and then be granted liberties.  Just not sure if I should get a hotel room big enough for him to stay with is when we are there for the weekend.

Also, after checking into A school, is this when he can have his cell phone and computer back?

Thanks Moms for any advise!

I don't know that's true or not; when my son graduated on 6/20/14, he was granted Friday afternoon (we had to drop him off at certain time on Friday evening back to his base), Saturday all day, but we had to drop him off again at his new base in GL... & picked him up again on Sunday morning... he wasn't allowed to stay overnight with us... not sure if the rule changed since then...

yes, he can have his cell phone and laptop once he settles in the new place; he'll have his own room.

No overnight, from what I understand they changed that a few years ago. After PIR you will get a few minutes with him and then he will have to go back to the barracks to get sent over to NTC to check into his "A' school. Bring his phone to PIR with you so he can call you to come back to the base to pick him up when he goes on liberty. When I was there in May, liberty ended at 10pm and then began again at 6am the next morning. You will have to meet him at the gate and then go back to his barracks with him to sign him out. The first phase of "A" school, they always have to have a liberty buddy, so you will be hanging onto him like a library book.

I would get a decent size room since it seems like a lot of the kids just want to go somewhere and not be in boot camp for a few hours. We stayed at Navy Lodge. It is really close to the base and you will be running back and forth a lot throughout the weekend. Plus it is inexpensive and there are a lot of other Navy families there so it's a really nice vibe

He can take his phone and laptop to "A" chool with him

Congrats! enjoy your weekend!

I'm guessing it's been a few years since his recruiter did this which is why I asked.  Thanks so much for the replies!  It will be a little easier to know what to expect.

I believe these ladies are right, No overnight liberty during PIR weekend, but nice, long days.  However, when my daughter graduated, she was not allowed to have her phone until after we picked her up from A School base on Friday afternoon.   She had to borrow a phone to call us to come pick her up once she was checked in at A School, which was common and no big deal.  This was a hard and fast rule at the time (last year), so double check with your sailor about giving him his phone right after the PIR ceremony. They may have changed the rule, but better safe than sorry. Congratulations to your new sailor!

This is great information!

Does anyone have any advise regarding parking for PIR?  We'll be renting a car while there for the weekend and I know we would have to get a parking pass the week before if we want to drive it to PIR.  Is it easy to get in and park or would it be easier to have a shuttle take us to and from PIR?

Thanks!

We had no problem at all getting on the base, just have your ID and the registration. I believe with a rental car, the rental agreement works. parking is pretty close to graduation and there are lots of sailors around and they are happy to point you in the right direction. Everyone had told me to take the shuttle but there were so many people waiting for it that I ended up taking my car and I am glad I did. Just DON'T use your cell phone while driving. i saw the MA that was at the gate yell at someone when they went thru the gate and nobody wants to be "that guy."

KP, if your SR is staying in GL for A School, they will leave shortly after PIR (45 minutes), (they already have their orders) they will pack up, board bus and get processed into their new base up the street about a mile. The base he is going to is absolutely beautiful. Depending on his new ship, it can take 1-4 hours for him to be processed in, get his new rack etc. They will Muster, and then he will call you and say come pick me up.  THEY DO NOT HAVE OVERNIGHT LIBERTY only Cinderella Liberty. All Sailors must return at the time their leaders tell them (some ships it is 9pm, some ships 10pm.)  DON"T be late, take him back 45 minutes early as the lines back onto base and can be long. Sometimes Sailors are RUNNING back to their ship because of traffic to get back on base. Sailors have been kicked out and sent home for good if they are late.

You can pick your SR up 7-8am on Saturday and return them by 9pm or 10pm that night.  Same for Sunday.  You will have to wait in the parking lot, your SR will walk out from his ship to the main gate parking lot (sometimes more than a mile walk for them) then he will get in the car, you will drive with him onto base, have ALL your ID's for every person in the car ready for security checkpoint at gate. you will drive to his ship and one parent must go with him to his ship (tons of parking everywhere like a college campus) and sign your SR out and say where you are going for the day. When you return each evening, you will drive with your SR back in, and sign him back in and say goodnight. (one small hug ok but nothing more, get all your hugs privately before you go back on base.)

Your SR MUST wear the uniform of the day each day and cannot be seen in public out of uniform. If you SR wants to hang out during the day in your hotel room, eat, shower, relax, eat some more (we brought snacks to the room) watch movies, etc, have some comfy sweats, shorts, tshirt etc for them to be comfy.

hope this helps, pm me if you have any other questions and congratulations to your Sailor!

This is so helpful. Thank you for explaining the procedure for the liberty days after PIR. Just one question. Do you use the gate pass all weekend to get on base ? Or do you just need your idea after that?

Thanks for all the great advise!

My son just graduated on 7/18 and is attending A school in GL.  He was able to visit with us for about 30 min right after graduation and then had to go get "moved" to A school.  We went back to the hotel and waited a couple hours before he was officially on Liberty.  He had to go back to the base each evening.  We had him back by 9pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  We spent most of the day Saturday at the Nex because he wanted to be setup/prepared for school before we left.  He needed things like hangers, clothes soap, shampoo, toilet paper, etc.  I know it sounds a little funny.....

My son just left today, he too will stay in the GL for A school. Were you all able to take him places or did he have to stay close to base after graduation?

My Daughter will be graduating 11-21-14 and I was wondering about "Holiday" leave the next week over Thanksgiving..     Does anyone know if they will have any daytime liberties over the Thanksgiving Weekend if they just started A School on Monday of that week?   I was maybe going to come back and spend a few days there if she can have daytime "Cinderella" liberty.  Thanks
