OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Hello everyone and welcome to the Navy!!! This Group was started for the loved one of DEPpers leaving in the month of August (although everyone is welcome).......What year you say? Well ......any year!

We are an extension of the group DEPpers/Future Sailors....in, but not gone yet- see the link above.

If you haven't been there, go there now....There is a ton of information that you will need and are probably dying for....like what to send with them to Boot Camp and BC videos! :)

So if you have general information and comments that will be helpful and/or encouraging for ALL new DEP/Future Sailor Moms, then leave it in that main DEPper/Future Sailors Group, but if you have August ship out issues/questions etc., need specific information, (or have some to share) or just want to talk to someone that is where you are, with a Recruit leaving for and arriving in BC in August, ...then this is the place to be. :-)

Remember, don't "miss 'em while you're with them!" :) Make the most of every precious moment together before they leave. This will be a big transition for both of you! We'll be here for you every step of the way...

Things to do in the last month before your future sailor leaves (Click on the link.)

Once your recruit has arrived at RTC, the next stop here is to join the group Boot Camp for Moms (and loved ones) Hangout and ask questions in this group until your form letter arrives.

***New news just out today (9/25/19) from the US Navy Recruit Training Command FaceBook page:

Attention families and friends of RTC: Previously, upon arrival to boot camp, recruits would box up their civilian belongings and ship it to their choice of destination. Our new procedure now has those boxes being stored locally and will be returned to the recruits the day before graduation. The new procedure went into effect this week beginning with Div. 409 in Training Group 52.

Approx two to three weeks after your recruit arrives you will receive the "Form Letter". The form letter will include their Ship# , DIV #, their mailing address, PIR date, and the Security Access Form. The Security Access form needs to be completed and sent back to your recruit ASAP. Keep this letter in a safe place, it has the information you will need.

The date that is on the form letter is the official date for your Recruit's Training Groups PIR (graduation), Things can always change for an individual Recruit (due to illness, injury, failure to pass a final test etc.)! So, we always recommend that you plan, if possible, to purchase Refundable or Exchangeable plane tickets.

After you have received the form letter, join the group for your recruits PIR. There you can ask questions about PIR, training, hotels etc.Those groups will be posted in the Boot Camp for Mom's group.

**It is very important that your future Sailor be physically fit prior to shipping to the RTC (these are new standards beginning 1/1/2018) and that he be able to pass an initial run test. See Navy Sets New Physical Fitness Standard to Start Boot Camp. "The initial run standard is evaluated on the 1.5 mile run of the first Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) at boot camp. The initial run standard for male recruits will be 16 minutes 10 seconds and 18 minutes seven seconds for female recruits."

Father, in the coming days, I will need You, but my recruit will need You more!
Let him perform his tasks with a sense of duty, not of anger or vengeance. Let his reflexes be quick and his hands steady. Let his head be clear and his eyes sharp. Let his mind and body be strong and his spirit stronger.

God, please stand by my recruit and watch his back when he cannot!
Father, I love this recruit of mine! Take from me what he needs and give me what he does not.

I will pace the nights, if it means he gets some sleep.
I will deal with fatigue, if it means he will have energy.
I will carry his fear, if it means it gives him courage.
I will take his pain, if it means he is healthy and whole.
I will take his anger, if it means he is at peace.

Comment by AU06UA12 on June 2, 2014 at 7:58am: I have some insight into the Loan Repayment Program (LRP).

It is not available for all ratings, so that will have to be the first determination. Second is that the green light for the LRP has to be instigated when at MEPS for the initial physical and swearing into the Inactive Reserves. From the date of MEPS, the potential sailor has 2 months to complete the paperwork which requires the recruiting office to be on top of things as well since it is from their office that the government forms are provided to the loan holder. (These forms that are completed by the loan holder to identify the amount of outstanding balances. And despite what the recruiter may tell your enlistee, these forms ARE NOT returned to the enlistee, rather they are provided back to the recruiting office.) The loans are repaid over the period of the enlistment rather than in one bulk payment. This ensures that the Navy will receive full value for their dollars.

When in BC, all recruits are given a lecture/presentation on the GI (Montgomery) Bill and how they can allocate part of their monthly pay to that program. At that point, unless the presenter is telling the recruits that the GI Bill only applies to non-degreed personnel, my understanding is that anyone can take advantage of the program. As an aside, my son-in-law was an officer (graduate of the ROTC program with a 4-yr scholarship) and he was able to contribute to the GI Bill while on active duty. He is now 33 and used the GI Bill to start and complete two Master's Degrees.

Again, though, the first key point is to find out if the enlistee's rating qualifies for LRP.

My sons recruiter told him it's either the loan program OR the GI bill, not both. I cannot seem to find that supporting info anywhere. Was anybody else told this?

Comment by AU06UA12 on June 1, 2014 at 11:02am: Wanted to let our group know that there have been so many instances where I have found out information about what awaits my soon-to-be SR than what the recruiter knows or shares. This site (N4M) is so awesome with the information sharing and knowledge through parental experience that I have been able to ease concerns and fears. More importantly, information is invariably confirmed by the recruiter if really pressed for an answer and presented with what is believe to be "fact" as learned from N4M. I'm not sure if the recruiters love N4M or wish we never existed since we tend to know this aspect of their job better than they do! Thanks to all of the veteran moms who have taken the time to share with the rest of us.
