Mom2b and dramasoul there is wifi inside the airport when they land. That is how my son contacted us that he landed ok. Your son's sponsor should take them to get a Japan phone once he gets there. They do not have to pay outright for there phone there like here. They just pay a monthly fee. I have not heard of being able to just get a japan number for his american iphone. They run on a different phone system here so our phones don't work. I turned my son's off but wish I had just suspended it. Cause when he came back to visit it was hard since his japan phone only worked with wifi getting a hold of him.

Tappermom my son is in Yokosuka. He has been there 2 1/2 years now and loves it. Is your son shore duty or on a ship. Mine is CT and now works in a shop. But has been out to see several times.

Hi. I have a son heading to Yokosuko. Does anyone else have a son or daughter there?

Mom2B...I have a friend who's son is in Japan and he got a Japanese phone number for his iPhone.  Is that what you are talking about? They use Viber and he said it's free.  I still have a couple of months before he goes so I want to work this out ahead of time. As I posted earlier, Verizon said we need to suspend his line and we have to supply the CO's name and rank as well as what base he will be on. We both have iPhones so we have done Facetime before.

Mom2b we use facetime on the iphone and it is free. Just like skype but an iphone app. it is wonderful.

Mom2b we used to use viber. Which is a free app to text and talk. However he will need to get a new phone once he gets to Japan. Make sure you turn his off or suspend it once he gets there and lets you know he is okay. My son has an iphone and so do we so we chat on there and no app needed.

Maggs....love it!!

Mom2B...so what was that app?  We have Verizon and I have already talked to Verizon about suspending the account when he leaves. We still have a little bit of time. He will be driving home and selling his car before he leaves.

Kathy (IT sailor)-

Everyone buys a car when they get to Misawa.  It is a fairly large base with people arriving and departing so there are plenty of cars for sale.  They drive on the left side of the road so the steering column is on the right side.  The Japanese don't like to plow their roads and they are not marked well.  Winter should be an adventure!  There are some mountains nearby to snowboard on.

AntiM- what an awful thing to have to witness;  thoughts and prayers to the families and all affected.

T-lynn, now that Blondie has managed a few days off, you have jumped right in and taken her place!  lol.
g/l with scouts and packing:

So, my sister dug up a whole bag full of gladiolas last fall, and gave them to me as she thought she would be moving. (hasn't moved yet).  It was around the holidays and I was so pre-occupied at the time, I told someone,  Just put them in the basement for now.
Well, a couple weeks ago she asked me if I'd planted them.
Planted them???? (oops)  I didn't even remember I Had them!  Then, wouldn't you know it, I could Not find them.  Naturally.    And I only found them by mistake, ha ha.
Now this is the first time I'd really looked into this bag, and there must have been over a hundred bulbs in there!
I felt so guilty that she had taken all that time to dig them up-so hubby helped me clear a bed and we planted them
Anyone know if they will grow??

Welcome, new moms!
Let us know how it's going with your sailors!
