Hey there,I am new in all this...my bf got on his first ship 10 days ago and i haven't heard from him since then :/ Is this normal, how often do you communicate with your husbands/boyfriends?Are they able to talk on every port?I would be happy if someone can fill me in :)

I am assuming they are out to sea (don't answer that, OPSEC reasons)

If he just arrived on board, they are working him long hours, no matter his rating, he needs to qualify for many things, like standing watch, or he may be cranking, working 18 hours days.  There may be a satt phone on board, but it is not cheap, and there may be lines.  Or, if the ship is on a critical mission, they won't be hitting port soon, or may be in"River City"... restricted communications, which means no outgoing communications.  That includes no emails.

He is surely thinking about you.  Write some lettres, let him know he is not forgotten.  He will get in touch when he can; this is when you truly learn what trust and patience during a deployment is all about.  Find the ship's homepage and see if any of the other SOs can ease your mind.

Thanks Anti M,...you must be right,,since he is new there i guess he is very busy, having to deal with their stuff ,to have enough sleep and to get used to his new life Thanks for your support once again :)

Also, if he is new on board, he may not have his email set up. There is a class they have to complete online having to do with internet in the work place in order to use their email. It can take time for that all to be set up once he arrives on board. Just try to be patient. No news is good news! He'll get you his email and address as soon as he can. Once he's all settled in, you should start hearing from him regularly. I usually get an email from my husband every other day and a phone call around once a month when he's out at sea. Everyone is different with their work hours, but communication is pretty regular on surface ships as long as they're not in River City.

Hang in there, it gets better, I promise!

Ah i hope you are right and that it gets better with us too...hope this is the reason he ain't writting :) hope he can use his e-mail soon ,thanks Emily

Does he have a cell phone? What was your communication like when he was in school. On ship they really can't make phone calls. But if he have a cell phone you should have been heard from him.

Cell phones do not work while out at sea. If you ever receive a phone call while they're at sea, it will be from the ship phones (there are pay phones on carriers, not sure about other ships).

He has a phone,I thought he will get on land and find a wifi cafe or something...but till now it's just nothing

If he is out at sea no most likely you will not hear from him. If his ship its in port yes you should hear from him

Hey! It's so different for everyone. I get about two emails a day when they are out to sea, but last week, for example, the email was totally out for about five days. We installed an app on our phone called Tango that we use to video chat when he's in port, but it requires wifi to use, and it's sometimes spotty at best. The internet is constantly going in and out, too, and the phone line isn't currently working on his ship. I just write him a lot of letters and care packages and trust that he's trying to communicate with me as much as he can (which he is fantastic about reassuring me about that -- that if he can, he will contact me). I've been super fortunate. I know there are some women on here whose SO's are on submarines and they don't hear from them for months at a time. His ship probably has a FB page. I liked my SO's and it's helped so much because his CO will post about what they are up to and stuff. Deployment is SO HARD, but it's worth it to be with the person that you love.

ah you really are lucky...I see you girls are from the usa but he isn't ,he is from asia and he has told me his ship company is not so good...I spotted his ship is on port and I thought he will go on land and find wifi and write at least that he is alive...I wanna hear at least this...he has a phone but is switched off (I guess he didn't pay it since he will be abroad for months) and I cant send him SMS or call :( I will search for such FB page....ah i never had such questions in my head before and now that he left i realise how many things i had to discuss with him so i don't get crazy from worries like now....thanks for the support,i  hope I hear from him soon

Surfgal, what can be this different lifestyle like? :/

yeah I have this fear that he may like his new kind of life too much that he won't need the one who waits him on land...hope he hasn't changed his mind but after all, this will show how strong our bond is :) let's see
