OPSEC.

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

Oh My Goodness, what a wonderful way to wake up on a Saturday morning with that first call from your SR!!!

For those who elect to stay at Navy GATEWAY Inn, just know that it is not within walking distance of RTC.  Some in the past have chosen this hotel for that reason.  It is about 2 miles from the hotel to RTC.

Although Navy LODGE is closer to RTC, you also cannot walk from there due to lack of sidewalks/traffic.  But no problem...Sarge's shuttle would be happy to get you to PIR or you can drive!

To add to Craig's post....the sailors on the A School base are not allowed near the Gateway normally.  So those moving over there who have family staying at the hotel will have to get a "chit" which will allow them to visit family in the hotel.  This is usually not a problem.

We hear great things about the Navy LODGE...and some of our N4Moms veterans stayed there when up for PIR.  The staff is wonderful....simple rooms, but sufficient.  It was renovated about a year or so ago.  You book in your SR's name if you yourself do not have military ID.  Your sailor may need to stop by the front desk at some point after PIR to verify.

Good Morning and welcome to the new members!

For those that plan on staying at the Gateway Inn which is located onboard Naval Station Great Lakes:

Yes, as civilians you can stay at the Gateway Inn.  It is an awesome hotel, especially if your sailor is staying in Great Lakes for "A" school.  They can easily walk to your room the next day after PIR (graduation).   The only problem with this hotel is it only holds 2 people.  Just a few rooms hold 4 people.    Remember, your sailor cannot spend the night so they don't count.

If you reserve your room a minimum of 30 days prior to PIR you do not have to have your sailor escort you on base.  You can come and go as you please without your sailor.  How?  They will check you out within that 30 day period to see if you are a good guy.  Then they will give you a base pass so you can be by yourself.

I will put the link at the end to the website to make your reservation if this is something you want to do.

Like I said before, this is an awesome hotel if your sailor is staying at GL for schooling since the barracks are really close. Secondly, ask for an ODD number room on the 4th or 5th floor in Bldg 62 only. With an ODD number room you will have an awesome view of Lake Michigan. The only downfall for the Gateway is the room only has one queen size bed. This is great if it a family of 2 (Mom & Dad) or a wife/GF, (remember you don't count the sailors since they can't sleep there).
They do have roll-away beds for free, so it is possible to get 4 in a room, but you need to confirm that the roll-away is available.
Go to this website for more info:

I know is I had a sailor staying at GL, this is the hotel I would stay.

Hey everyone, I want to give you a "HEADS UP" to be prepared to receive calls from your SRs this weekend!  The call will show up as "847", "Pay Phone", or "Government" or anything else that may be unfamiliar.  If it is a sales call, just politely tell them "No, thank you."

During this time in Boot Camp, please keep your cell phones charged, ready, and with you all the time---upstairs, downstairs, out in the backyard, in the bathroom, out to get the mail, of course, out on errands.  If you are going to a loud restaurant or a movie theater, remember to put it on "vibrate" and put in your pocket or some place you can feel it.  They can call during the week or weekend, so just be prepared:  6:00 am - 6:00 pm (West Coast); 8:00 am - 8:00 pm (Great Lakes time); 9:00 am - 9:00 pm (East Coast).

We received our letter too!  Our son is in division 945, Ship 2.  We are from Colorado.  I have already been through this twice, but it does not get any easier.  We have our plane tickets, room at Navy Lodge, and a rental car!
