Hello - My son is a senior in high school and is thinking of the delayed entry program for the Navy.  I would love to get some feedback from parents who have had experience with this during high school and also after graduation (boot camp, etc.).  Happy?  Not happy?  Good experience?  Bad experience?  Help anyone?

Yea my son is missing the meetings because of football so this is good to know. Thank you for info and best of luck to your family.

My son done the DEP and it was a great experience for him. His group met every Wednesday. He swore in in October of his senior year and he graduated HS this past June and he will graduate BC next month!! DEP helps them start to learn how the navy works and some of the rules as well as starting to workout and get into shape earlier than just showing up at BC and having to start that. It think my son was definitely better prepared for BC due to DEP.

Cindy, I left info for you on your My Page.

Thank you for info.  I hope he continues to do well.  I appreciate the info.

My daughter did this.  It has been a good experience for her.  She had to go to regular meetings, which included some physical training and working on the things they have to know.  It helped to keep her focused and she met others who were in the same situation.  Even though she had an issue that kept her from going to boot camp on her original date, the recruiter helped her to get things worked out and she is on course to go to RTC soon and still in line for the training she wanted.

My son did DEP.  I haven't much to offer more than what's been said already, but again, he enjoyed it.  I liked that they had the weekly meetings to keep him on track, busy, and looking forward to going.  I also liked that I got the extra time after graduation, I consider that a real blessing.

Thank you so much for sharing.  :)

My son did the Delayed Entry Program signed up in July of last year and went into bootcamp last month so a whole year.  There were extending circumstances involved getting  my sons paperwork etc.  (unique case)  but he had to attend meeting every other week fitness tests etc and sometimes go places with the recruiter.  He got to meet and learn a lot before he left.  Big plus he is an E2 going into Bootcamp and will be an E3 upon completion of A School plus he already has a lot of his  reserve duty  served for when he comes out !!

You should encourage your son to go for it.  Congrats!!

RedJade - What extra time after graduation?   thanks..

hello- my son just grauated high school june 2014, he did the delayed entry program throughout his senior year. Being a mom i found it to be help, informative and they prepare the futrure sailors with meetings, pt ect, it's a good way to know if this is what your son or daughter wants to do, his recuiter was thre evey step of the way and answered all of our questions and put us at ease, our son is now in bootcamp in chicago and will graduated in oct. It is hard to watch them leave, but knowing this is waht he wants makes it aliitle eaiser, i still look for him every day miss him beyond words. I wsh your son all the best michelle

Hi Tjen67.  My daughter was also a depper.  I recommend navydep.com.  She loved the delayed entry program, and the website.  The website is run by a retired Navy Vet.  My son just saw the recruiter last week.  He needs to study for the asvab test.  Once he passes the practice test, then it's onto the paperwork and Meps.  He missed by 4 points, so not a real big deal.  Good luck to you!
