I'm looking forward to this event tomorrow - $$ goes directly to helping soldiers (sailor is one this year) check it out if you're close! I don't usually see stuff this close to home here in southern Illinois https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=265819513614794&id=....

Thinking about those calls from boot camp a year ago makes me want to cry. It's so exciting to get them. My son is deployed on the Bush right now, so those calls are few and far between.

Yes, Donna is right. I was in a group for his PIR date, and it was very helpful the closer it got to that day. Those groups are usually very active also.

Brittanysmom, do you have a group for your daughters division?  If not, make one so that you can 'compare' and share with the other moms (and dads) what each recruit is saying in their letters!  Phone calls even 4 minute calls are the best!!

Nice to meet you Donna. I got a call last Saturday-only 4 minutes but it made my day. She sounded happy and excited!

Brittanysmom, I am also in Mt. Vernon, I am glad you have received your first letter and that she is enjoying it!!  PIR will be here before you know it.

amiles, we always stayed in Portsmouth area when visiting our sailor, since that was closer to where he rented while in Norfolk base.  You need to know what side of the tunnels you want to stay by.  Tons of fun and great eating there.

I am 30 miles northeast of St. Louis. My sailor is in Norfolk. My son will be getting out in april 2015, I miss him so much!

We're north of there a little ways. I work in Effingham. We have friends in Marion and meet in Mt. Vernon quite often. We go to Salem quite a bit too.

Brittanysmom--our sailor was born in Mt. Vernon!  We get there every few months to check in on sis-in-law in nursing home.

It looks like Wednesday will be your "stalk the mail carrier" day.

Got my first letters from my daughter yesterday. So far she is enjoying military life!
