My daughter’s BC starts in January, 2015 and I had some questions regarding what her experience will be like.

What is January weather like in Great Lakes? Is there anything she should prepare for?

Thanks in advance for any input you can provide.

You are very welcome. And you as well.

FACT: In its 100+ year history, no Recruit or Sailor has ever frozen to death at Great Lakes.

Personally, as a child growing up only a couple miles from GL, I recall actually playing in the snow and walking to school is sub-zero temperatures. Inconceivable! ;)

Hello CryptoDad, thank you for your assurance and attached picture. People express concern on weather issue are mostly from warmer climate area, sub 0 condition can only be imagined. Good day all!

What day is your daughter leaving? My son is scheduled to head up there on the 13th of January...

Hello scrappy, sorry for the late reply; due to holidays and busy schedules I have not read my mail for a while. My daughter leaves on January 6th. Emotional roller coaster going full speed now … Good luck to all!

Hi Scrappy,

My son also arrived January 13th.  Have you received the form letter yet?  Anxiously awaiting an address!

When my son was there in January 2012 they still marched outside unless the weather was really bad. I saw pics of them wrapped up in layers with ski-type masks on. He said they did March outside. Guess it's changed! :-)

They were most likely marching between buildings, not training outside. There are no tunnels underground between the buildings, so, yes, recruits will be marching outside at times and the RDC's will try to keep that time outside as short as possible and the recruits are bundled up very well. They wear thermal underwear, heavy outerwear, gloves, facemasks, scarfs, and earmuffs as needed.

Hi lemonelephant, thank you for the detail description on boot camp conditions. Question; where can I find Navy acronyms like “RDC”, “from P days to PIR”? …

The Page, What does ??? mean? (A Guide to Navy Abbreviations and Terminology), will help you with many of the new terms you will come across.

Arrival and What Happens at the RTC will let you know what happens at the RTC.

Thank you lemonelephant for the pointer, it’s very helpful. Have a nice day.

You are very welcome.
