Hello.  I am trying to wrap my head around what PIR weekend will be like.  I have read and been given conflicting info. from the recruiter.  Will our son be able to stay with us at the hotel before he leaves for "A" school or will he have to return to GL each evening?  When will we find out if he leaves the next day or on Monday for Charleston so we know how many nights to book?  Thanks for any help.

Those who do not attend A school in GL, will typically leave on Saturday. The navy will make their flight arrangements. They can spend the day with you on Friday, but have to be back to their ship by 9pm. You can meet them at the airport and spend time with them while they wait for their flight.

Thanks so much.

My first son had A school on Penscola so unfortunately after PIR we headed to the airport to say our goodbyes. Didn't get a lot of time with him. But everyone is different!

When do you find out exactly when they will leave for A school?  Thanks.

Also, just an FYI - the recruits are due back Fri evening - let's say 7 or 8, not sure - they have to pack up and get on buses about 2am and they ship them all to the airport if they are leaving...some sooner, depending on where they are going.  You will not know until grad day if they are leaving later on Friday or Saturday morning.  But if they are leaving Sat morning, and you want to spend time with them, be prepared to go to the airport at like 3am and have them paged and they can sign you in until they leave.  This is where you give them their cell phones and extra clothes and laptops and stuff.  It's exhausting, but necessary.

Thanks auntbonnielou. This is so helpful.  The more I read, the more I see we will have very little time with our son.  I had planned on bringing his laptop and cell phone, but how many extra items will he need?  Just clothes for the barracks?  I thought I read he has to be in uniform most of the time for awhile at school. Does he receive a bag or do I need to bring a backpack or something?  Thanks so much for your help.
