OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

~OPSEC OPerational SECurity, is always of the utmost importance.

~N4M’s also has Community Guidelines just like any other social media.

~Please take the time to read the OPSEC and N4M’s Community Guidelines.

~A quick note here, from the N4M’s CG’s:

• Don’t Jeopardize the Safety of Our Sailors: Remember OPSEC (Operational Security) (Don’t Sink Ships With Loose Lips) This site and all content posted on it are viewable to everyone on the Internet. This doesn’t mean you can’t share things about your Sailor – but too many details can put Sailors in harm’s way. The following are examples of red flags and should not be shared within this community either by posting or sending via a Group message:

• Sailors’ last names. This includes your username if you share the same last name as your son or daughter.

Some Suggestions:

~If your last name is different from your Recruits it is still not recommended for you to use in your username for your own personal security. This is your option. It is also not a good idea to use an email address as your username for personal security reasons.

~First Names and pictures of your Recruit are allowed but remember, everyone can see it and someone can easily match them up with their "mom". So you might want to consider changing your profile picture to not include your Recruit at least for the duration of BC. Again, your option

~It is also a good idea to make your settings for your Profile Page "viewable only to your friends"

Glad lots of you got calls!

Usually if a phone is not working right, they are allowed to try again...wonder what happened, JaMi~~

Those planning to stay at Navy Lodge need to book now.....they tend to fill up.  Call direct and book in your SR's name if you do not have your own military ID.  Call the Great Lakes  Navy Lodge (google for number) directly to book.

JaMi:  Hope you get another call from your SR soon!

Chompermom:  It is so hard for them in the first part of Bootcamp....lots of yelling, strange routines, cut off from family/friends/routine, homesickness many times....they are told everything to do and how to do it!  But it will get better for them as Bootcamp goes along!  You will treasure every letter and phone call....and your SR will do the same.

We advise all to write OFTEN!  Everyday if possible....get friends, mentors in this lives, relatives to write also.  Some ladies in the past PIR groups even gave these people pre-addressed/stamped envelopes so they could just drop in a letter and send it to their SR.  The SRs LIVE for these letters.  If your SR mentions a bunkmate not receiving mail, please send an extra letter in your SR's envelope for this SR.  They so appreciate it.

Hoping this PIR group will be able to write for the first time tomorrow and start receiving their letters (held from them for about 2 weeks until their Recruit Mail Petty Officer is trained)....if not tomorrow, it should be next Sunday.  After that initial mail delivery, they still can only write and mail out on Sunday (mailed on Monday) but they will receive mail  M-F.

My son arrived on 9/9, got the call at 1:13am, box came last week and missed it, so we put a note out and got it the next day. The form letter came on Thursday and our first letter to him went out Friday. Sent my second letter today after he called Saturday morning about 8:15. The call was too quick! I was a wreck bc I couldn't contain myself. I could hear him get choked up. He said it was a little rough and he sounded really tired. He is excited about his COs, other than the yelling he likes them. He was happy to have the mail job because no one would yell at him and he would be making folks smile. that made my day even though I cried the rest of the morning. His PIR is Nov 7th. Ship 14 Div 354.

My son called his girlfriend not his parents but as long as he's OK is all that matters. Hopefully he will get another chance to call soon.

Yes it was, Dianne. I did reverse look up on the number and it was listed as Waukegan/North Chicago.

JaMi:  Was it 847 area code?

Comment by JaMi.H on September 20, 2014 at 1:05pm

It's great to hear about all your calls! I'm so jealous. My phone company will be getting my wrath today.
