Here's a cute statue that they have at Broadway Pier (right across from the USS Midway).

And this is my hubby on the USS Somerset:

And one last one on the Nimitz:

Sierrascrapper - the longest line was to take the shuttle from the staging area over to the dock to see the ships.  We did wait in that for close to an hour.  The nice thing was they had all sorts of planes to look at so hubby & I took turns standing in line.  Then they finally brought in another bus to transport people & it went quicker after that.  We didn't have any lines to tour the ships....the Nimitz didn't have a "guided" tour per say.  You were only allowed on one deck and then you could ride the big elevator up to the flight deck (that was pretty cool!).  The Somerset actually had a guided tour and they took us throughout the boat......there was also a tour of the USS Pickney but we didn't get to that one because we spent so much time talking on the Nimitz!  I wasn't too upset though because I got info from the captain and the chief that I probably will never have the opportunity to get again.

Thanks for sharing your Fleet Week experience B'sNukeMom. We are so looking forward to going to Fleet Week in SF next month.  I can't wait to go!  I think it will be cool for my Sailor's twin to find out what his brother is going to experience in the future.  Plus I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Blue Angels and can't wait to see them perform again!  How was the waiting in line to tour the ships?  That is my biggest fear is that my family may be less likely to be patient with that unlike me.  I will wait forever to tour a ship, loved it in high school and would love to experience it again.  The USS America is supposed to be christened too!  Would love to see that!

Thanks for the tip CO-twin...I am glad they throw them a curve ball now and then.  Don't want them to get complacent.   I sure do look forward to the journey ahead for my son and I expect there to be many ups and downs overall.  Isn't that what life is about?  LOL

Yes Sierra scrapper, they do stuff like that as a character test I think.

Do not be surprised if he does not good on one test coming up. It seems to me that one early on they give them is a real curve ball to let them know to pay attention. Sam was really bummed when that happened, then he figured out it had a message attached for them to learn. From then on he did great.

Hi All - Happy First Day of Fall!

Had a great time in San Diego at Fleet Week.  Spent a lot of time on the Nimitz - got to meet the Commanding Officer - Capt. Jeff Ruth.  He has been through the nuke program (when he was 42!).  He saw my hubby's hat that he was wearing (say's NNPTC Power School) and came over to speak with us.  Very nice man.  Some interesting stories he shared.  Also met a nuke chief that we spent over an hour talking to....he answered any question that hubby & I had and was just a pleasure to speak to.....put my mind to ease a bit about what to expect when sailor hits the fleet ;-).  Also toured the USS Somerset which is named in honor of the passengers & crew of United Flight 93 that crashed on 9/11 in PA.  It is an amphibious transport dock.  Very emotional... Overall we had a great time - if you ever get the opportunity to go to Fleet Week I highly recommend it.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Well after not getting to chat with my Sailor this weekend due to him studying for his first test today.  I'm happy as a clam, as he texted today that he did REALLY awesome!  He almost got a perfect score, but noticed the instructor marked one correct that was not.  He brought it to his attention and had the score changed.  I bet that was a test too!  So proud and can't wait to see how this journey moves along for him.

William, my son has been in Hawaii since April after finishing prototype.  It sure is a long way from home but he seems to be enjoying it.  His sub is in dry dock but it sounds like he may be getting his feet wet soon on another sub.

Best of luck to your son. I'm sure they'll be bumping into one another:)

My son got all his stuff moved to Hawaii by the Navy and he is getting paid BAH now and will continue to be once he arrives in Hawaii.

I am DEFINATELY getting a sofa shot next time (probably/hopefully Christmas) seems like that is all he wanted to do when he was here, and EAT and workout. We have a full scale gym and he worked out every day. Hard to believe he is already back at GC waiting for Power school to start Oct 6. I am preparing a care package to send next week.
