kjzmsmom - Prototype is supposed to be 24 weeks.  That being said it is hard to say.....It's not like A school & Power School where it is all classroom study.  The first 7 weeks of proto are classroom and then comes the hands-on part.  That is where the delays can come in....my son is in BS so I can't speak for GC, but I know my son started proto in April and maybe will have a grad date in December.  Nothing for sure yet.....On the other hand once proto starts they do have a set schedule and about once a month they have 4 days straight off.  My son always knows when that is so your sailor could make plans to do a wedding at that time.

Wishing a Happy Birthday to Co-Twin! (I hope I have the right date!)

Could someone explain how long it takes once a sailor starts prototype (in Goose Creek)?  My son and his fiance' are waiting until he starts prototype to set a wedding date, but I'm wondering if the prototype end dates could change and goof up their plans. Once prototype starts, are the dates that it finishes set (assuming no big disasters like the cheating scandal last year)?  Thanks!

Congrats to those finishing up prototype. What a long journey it has been. Keep us posted on ship assignments.

MEDSFRED, my son just graduated from BC at the end of Aug. He wanted Nuke ET but was given the rank of Nuke MM. He seems to be excited about it even though it wasn't his first choice. He is now in A school and doing excellent in class.

MDESFRED - They will get their rate assignment around week 5, maybe 6. They will pull the Nukes aside and discuss the program and the different rates. The recruits will have an opportunity to ask questions, and put in their preferences. Shortly thereafter, the assignments are made. Of course, "needs of the Navy" come first, followed by ASVAB and NAPT scores, and recruit's preference. MARK's description of the distribution sounds pretty accurate. My son, who had a fairly strong preference going in, said he would be happy with whatever rate he was assigned.

Mark, she has been at bc since 9/3, with processing days today is only Day of training Week 3, day 3.  She has been there about halfway now.  The MM is the one she is least interested in .  But we will see what she gets.  I was hoping that she would be able to let me know pretty soon so it sounds like we are getting close.  Thanks for the info and the percentages!

MDESFRED - dunno what DOT 3-3 is, but they learn their job (rating) about halfway through boot camp.  One additional note - if Machinist Mate (MM) is their first choice, they can count on getting it, because there are always more MMs needed than the number who make it their first choice.  Roughly 50% of nucs will be MMs, a little less than 30% EMs, and a little more than 20% ETs.

Comment by MDESFRED on September 30, 2014 at 5:09pm

Question please.  My SR is DOT 3-3.  When will she find out what Nuke job the Navy has in store for her? TIA

Congratulations for a job well done to those passing their quals. It is absolutely amazing to see the ebb and flow of the Nuke pipeline and see how all of you strong Navy Moms and Dads survive it.  With our journey really just getting started, it helps me to understand what will lie ahead for our son and for us too.  THANK YOU to all for you and your Sailors!  YOU ALL ROCK!!!!!
