Emily - are you on FB? I have a fellow Navy Mom in our area who has some questions. Her son is also leaving from Chicago to Africa. Not sure if you can help her or not .

I have a corpsman, also. He's currently stationed in Chicago, but getting ready, with lots of uncertainty, to head to Africa for a 7 mos deployment. Christine, your son will find fun sooner or later. Chicago is my sons first duty station, and he pretty much hated life when he got there. The base is actually waukegan and there's not much to do, compared to other more "exciting" places most of his friends got sent to. He got adjusted in no time. His car was a big thing for him, also. We brought it out to him, and he was so relieved to be able to get off base!!

Amburg60. I hear you there travel is crazy expensive. Are there any programs for navy/military families to help with travel costs? I know the airlines give soldiers a discount.

shanesmama2 My son is on land so no sea duty yet. He will be in Hawaii for 3 yrs. He got there this past Christmas. I want to go see him soon but it is very exspensive. Haven't seen him in over a yr. :(

Shanesmama:  well its good and bad...good that its close enough to drive but bad because he will most likely deploy more often than standard sea duty...It least that's what they are telling him now.

Ambur60 hi nice to meet you. Hawaii how amazing. Does that count as state side or sea duty? I know it's the states but just curious. Mariekg how lucky for you too to have him so close and very lucky that counts as sea duty.

Good to see some activity here!  My name is Marie and my son is currently at Pensacola completing IT A school.  He graduates on Thursday and has been assigned a duty station in Maryland.  He kind of lucked out because although it is a shore side duty station it counts as Sea duty !  I am from Staten Island.
