Yay slezaksmom! What a wonderful story - have a great time at graduation tomorrow. Bravo Zulu to all the proto grads ;-)

So, I'm traveling today to Albany, NY, to attend the Prototyoe graduation tomorrow!! Yes, I'm very excited, but it's been rough...

I was supposed to leave yesterday, but something got messed up with my 3rd-party, cheap airfare site and agent who assisted me. The flight got booked for today instead of yesterday and I was pretty much crushed when they told me there was nothing that could happen any sooner -- even if I paid the exorbitant fees!

So, I waited and am flying today. I've got a connection in DC (now), but as I was waiting (in the front of the line!) to board, the gate agent told me that I'd have to check my bag because the zone on my ticket indicated I'd be boarding last and the flight was going to be too full for overhead baggage by the time I got on. "Oh, no! I'm going to miss it, or embarrass my kid by attending graduation in travel clothes with only purse makeup," I thought to myself...

Before I could process this, a random guy came up to me and said, "There you are! I've been waiting for you over here in priority boarding!!" He sorta moved me and my suitcase over to where his stuff was, and as the gate agent walked away he said,

"I'm James. I overheard you've been having some troubles getting to see your son graduate. My brother was Navy and I got to see him graduate in Pensacola a long time ago. I know it meant a lot to him. I can't get you there any sooner, but I can make sure you don't have to check your bag. We're together now and you can board with me when 1st class boards."

I was stunned. I'm sure I said thank you (hope I did, but it's fuzzy) and I said, "How can I repay you?" James said, "You don't have to. Tell you son I said thank you, for sure, but I want to thank you, too. It's families as well as the guys doing the job who sacrifice, too, you know?"

Well, I teared up then and am now as I type, but James made my day and I wanted to share because you all deserve a thank you, too!!

I just called the base at Goose Creek and the Petty Officer told me that during Thanksgiving they have special liberty and he will be allowed off base during the day.  They will get the exact times they are allowed off at or near their PIR.  She said that the special liberty will run from Wed. 11-26 - Sunday, Nov. 30.

I just hope you don't travel far for this thanksgiving to Charleston, peejinator.  My first to go navy, was in Boot camp for that first Thanksgiving and Christmas his second he was out to sea. His twin came home last year for Christmas, We skyped for Thanksgiving, He went to a fancy restaurant. This year he is in Prototype and will not be home for the first time. I am far far away so can't afford o fly there to be with them.

I didn't want him not to have family for Thanksgiving...so I will take what time I can get.

gretamae & peejinator - if you look in the discussions above on page 4 you will see a discussion titled "Sightseeing in Charleston!".  Take a look at that as it has some good info on places to visit/things to do. Should be helpful for your visit! (I didn't bump it, but feel free to comment & it will move it up.)

NancyJo - that is a perfect way of putting it!  "Seems like yesterday, seems like forever".
