Let's chat about our wonderful sons and daughters who have chosen the PACT program.

Hello

It has been a long time since I have posted and I am sorry. I hope everyone has been able to connect with others in the PACT program. My son is now 3 and a half years in and it has been a great experience. He thought he wanted to be an AM. When he got on the ship, he was put with the AO’s. Now he is an AD3. It was best for him to start PACT because we didn’t know much about the Navy and he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do. This has been a good route for him.

Hubby just had knee surgery, been busy!!

Nvduhmom,

Tara went in 2007 undesignated because she didn’t get the score she needed for the rate she wanted.  She was assigned to Camp Pendleton in San Diego in 2008. No ships, they have the LCAC Landing Craft Air Cushion (hovercraft). So it was hard for her to see other jobs until she requested to go on deployment with her detachment. Which she did in Jan of 2009. While she was out she decided that the rate she originally wanted, was not for her.

She did request to try other jobs while at Pendleton, which each time she figured out it wasn’t for her. But that’s my daughter!!!!

Back in 2009 everyone was joining the Navy due to the economy. She only had an average ASVAB score, there wasn’t a lot for her to choose from and some rates she just didn’t want. There are a lot of factors that determine if one is eligible to go to A school. She was denied a few times. A lot of it is computer generated.

I believe that if she wasn’t rated by the time reenlistment came around she would not be able to reenlist. So she decided to take the test for Boatswains mate. The first time she had the scores but it was overmanned. So she had to take it again in 6 months. She finally got rated in June of 2010.

The good thing is every time you take a test you get points, which can be added into your score the next time. Also, if you are taking college classes or have been to college those give you points also.

As far as quals…..like I said the undesignated program has changed since she joined. Maybe there are quals you can do ahead of time before applying for a rate?

I know quals are an on going thing within your rate. There are always things that you need to, or should be qualified for. It’s kind of an on the job training, you will be signed off as you learn new steps, once you get all the signatures you need and they believe you know the job, then you are qualified to do whatever it may be.

Tara just qualified for a certain “watch bill” for duty. There are always things to qualify for. Your Chief may want you to do something you're not interested in but…..you do it.

He is getting excited. Waiting is hard!! He has a friend training to try to get into navy seals so he went with them to a pool to meet with a former seal. I think he learned a lot. Does your son graduate December 5th?

CrackerjackMom

How long did it take for your daughter to strike a job? Did she do all the quals online or when she was at shore?  My son said he had to go to shore in Norfolk to have access to website to do prequals.  He is now at sea.  can they do it at sea as well?  can they use their own computer or do they go on different computers for that use?

Michael's mom

they should find out where they are stationed about a week before they graduate bootcamp.

All A-PACTS go to P'cola.  they don't have a choice.  They can give a list of 3 places where they would like to be stationed after P'cola, but the Navy will send them where they want them.  Luckily my son is on the east coast near his sister.  (I am on the west coast, unfortunatley).  I never heard of top sailors getting a choice.  they usually get their orders out of bootcamp. My son has seen alot of other sailors looking down on undesigs.  My son got a great ASVAB score , but didn't want to wait for 6 mos to get a job that he wanted.  They need to be prepared with what they will encounter, but they can prove to the rest they are just as good as the rest!

Everything I heard says APACT goes to Pensacola for about a month of training and that's where and when they find out where they go from there

Crackerjack mom- is your daughter still in the navy? If so, what is her job now?
Comment by Vickie360 on October 29, 2014 at 9:59pm
Thanks NVDUHMOM! Great information! I appreciate you sharing it with us. I think this will be good for my son so he can see lots of different areas of work. Do they just tell them where they will go after Florida or Do they have a choice? (My son said that in regular A school the top students get a choice). Where there other A PACT sailors graduating boot camp at the same time? I don't know how common this is...
